That's why we flip through ten TV channels before finally stopping on the eleventh. At the bookstore, we thumb through a dozen novels before finally choosing just one. We filter, we rank, we judge. This is, in fact, natural behavior—there is simply too much in the world. (p. 13)\n\nFrick explained, \"Immigrants worried about looking shabby, so many of them made their own clothes to imitate the latest fashions—fitting themselves into the image of Americans. That's when phrases like 'clothes make the man' and 'first impressions matter' came about.\" In the end, the question \"Does she or doesn't she?\" is one that arises in an age when we can no longer tell not just someone's natural hair color, but their true self. What this slogan really means isn't \"Does she dye it or not?\" but simply \"Is she or isn't she?\"—in other words, \"Is she a housewife or not?\" (pp. 25–26)\n\nWhy did the Veg-O-Matic sell like hotcakes? First, consumers wanted a product that made it easier to cut vegetables. Beyond that, the Veg-O-Matic perfectly united the medium (television) with the message (the product). In truth, it was an extremely simple product: you placed a potato on the mold and pressed down, and it was ready to be made into fries. There were no buttons to push, no hidden complicated mechanisms. A two-minute demonstration was enough to dispel any fear of an unfamiliar new product. And simply pointing a camera at a vegetable being sliced was enough to instantly capture viewers' attention. In the end, television turned products into stars more effectively than even the best salesman ever could. (……) 지금까지 인류가 반복해 온 비극을 우리는 또다시 되풀이할 것인가? 아니면 이미 지불한 비싼 수업료의 값어치를 살려 더욱 높은 수준의 지성을 발휘하는 인류, 이른바 새로운 유형의 인류로 살아갈 것인가?\u003cbr\u003e\n\u0026lt;프롤로그_교양이 없는 전문가보다 위험한 존재는 없다\u0026gt;, pp.16~17\u003cbr\u003e\n이솝우화에 「여우와 신 포도」 이야기가 있다. 여우가 먹음직스러운 포도를 발견했지만 아무리 애를 써도 손이 닿지 않았다. 결국 여우는 “이 포도는 엄청 신 게 분명해. 이런 걸 누가 먹겠어!”라며 가 버린다. 이는 르상티망에 사로잡힌 사람의 전형적인 반응을 보여 준다. 여우는 손이 닿지 않는 포도에 대한 분한 마음을 ‘저 포도는 엄청 시다’라고 생각을 바꿈으로써 해소한다. 니체는 바로 이 점을 문제 삼아 우리가 갖고 있는 본래의 인식 능력과 판단 능력이 르상티망에 의해 왜곡될 가능성이 있다고 지적했다.\u003cbr\u003e\n\u0026lt;01. 타인의 시기심을 관찰하면 비즈니스 기회가 보인다\u0026gt;, pp.50~51\u003cbr\u003e\n오늘날 조직에서 의견 교환이 기탄없이 오가면 오갈수록 의사 결정의 질이 높아진다는 사실이 수많은 실증 연구에서 밝혀졌는데, 밀은 무려 150년 전에 그 사실을 확신했다.(……) 밀은 『자유론』에서 처형된 소크라테스나 예수가 현재는 위인으로 칭송받고 그들이 남긴 사상이 광범위한 분야에서 받아들여지고 있다는 사실을 거론하면서 어느 시대의 ‘악’은 시대를 거치며 ‘선’이 되기도 한다고 지적했다. 이는 다시 말해 어떤 아이디어의 옳고 그름은 그 시대의 엘리트가 통제하는 대로 결정되지 않고, 오랜 세월 동안 많은 사람들의 다면적인 사고를 거쳐 결정된다는 사실을 시사한다.\u003cbr\u003e\n\u0026lt;16. 끝까지 이의를 제기하는 사람이 있는가\u0026gt;, p.137\u003cbr\u003e\n레빈에 의하면 어떤 사고방식이나 행동 양식이 정착되어 있는 조직은 ‘행동-혼란-재동결’의 과정을 거쳐 변화한다. 여기서 이 프로세스가 ‘해동’에서 시작된다는 점에 주목해야 한다. 해동이라는 것은 바로 ‘끝내다’라는 의미를 담고 있기 때문이다. 우리는 무언가 새로운 것을 시도하려고 할 때 앞으로의 일을 ‘시작’하는 데만 초점을 맞춘다. 당연한 일이다. 하지만 쿠르트 레빈의 지적은 새로운 것을 시작할 때 가장 먼저 해야 할 일은 오히려 지금까지의 방식을 잊는 것, 즉 이전 방식에 ‘종지부를 찍는 일’이라는 점을 상기시켜 준다.\u003cbr\u003e\n\u0026lt;18. 혁신은 새로운 시도가 아닌 과거와의 작별에서 시작한다\u0026gt;, p.151\u003cbr\u003e\n우리는 항상 이해력이 빠른 아이를 사랑하는 한편, 좀처럼 실력이 늘지 않는 아이는 아주 짧은 기간 내에 포기하는 나쁜 습성을 갖고 있다. 이런 일이 일어나는 까닭은 교육을 위한 비용이 무한하지 않기 때문이다. 회사에서의 교육 투자든 사회 자본으로서의 교육 기회든 모두 마찬가지다. 우리는 비용 대비 효과가 더 높은 아이에게 교육 투자를 몰아주는 경향이 있다. 초기의 성적 결과에 따라 잘하는 아이에게 더 좋은 기회가 주어지고 그 결과 성적이 더 올라간다. 반면 첫 타석에서 좋은 성적을 내지 못한 아이는 점점 더 힘든 여건으로 내몰리기 십상이다. 이런 일이 계속되다 보면 세상 물정에 밝은 아이만 조직에 받아들여지게 되고, 어느 정도 능숙해지는 데 시간이 걸리지만 본질적으로 사물을 이해하려고 애쓰는 아이 즉 혁신의 종자가 될 아이디어를 낼 수 있는 사람은 소외시키게 될 가능성이 있다.\u003cbr\u003e\n\u0026lt;21. 가난한 사람은 더 가난해지고 부유한 사람은 더 부유해진다\u0026gt;, p.172\u003cbr\u003e\n주체적으로 최적의 해답을 구하기 위한 논리 사고가 강세인 오늘날에는 ‘무엇이 정답인지 잘 모르겠다, 그저 되어 가는 형편대로 결정하자’는 태도가 ‘포기’로 비칠지도 모른다. 경영 관리 측면에서는 철두철미하게 자기 머리로 생각하는 태도가 미덕으로 여겨질지 모른다. 머리로만 생각하는 일을 어리석다고 생각하는 사람은 어쩌면 거의 없을 것이다. 하지만 모든 최적의 정답을 스스로 도출할 수 있다고 생각하는 것이야말로 지적 오만이 아닐까?
