2016 Golden Goblin Award winner Jeong Jin-ho's new picture book "Wall" was published by Biryongso Co., Ltd.
Author Jin-ho Jeong won the Ragazzi Award at the 2015 Bologna International Children's Book Fair, and is promising as a new Korean picture book author drawing global attention. As an author who majored in architecture, 『Wall』 interprets the spaces we are familiar with in a unique way. 『Wall』, composed only of straight lines, curves, yellow and blue, immerses us into a magical world of space. If you place 『Wall』 on a flat floor and turn each scene with your hands, you will naturally draw the entire space and its parts in your mind. Just following the child in the picture creates a sense of space as if experiencing virtual reality. If you narrow and widen 『Wall』 with both hands open, it is even fun to compare and see how the position and distance of the wall in the picture change. While playing with a book, the concepts of direction and space, such as front and back, top and bottom, inside and outside, right and left, are engraved in the mind.
『Wall』 will awaken children's sense of empathy, give them the joy of imagination, and give adults an open mind to look at the world with warm eyes.
A wall is a story between inside and outside.
Everything has an inside and an outside.
It depends on where we look.
What is important is a warm perspective that allows you to see all aspects together.
-Writer Jeong Jin-ho
The joy of exploring the world of amazing spaces
A curious child follows the wall and discovers a small window. The child was looking inside, but before he knew it, he was looking outside. The child moves closer to the wall, but she moves further away. This time he went inside the door, but the child ended up coming out. He said the kid thought he was turning right, but he is going left. The child looks at the small-looking window and wonders if it might be big. He does and thinks. He was a child. Why did he see a small window and think he was big?
The picture book “Wall” contains a world of space that appears differently depending on the viewing direction. So, children who read this book draw spaces in their minds following the scenes. While the child enjoys imagining changing the location and direction according to the character, he or she acquires a sense and concept of space. It is also good for children to choose a scene they like and freely imagine and expand the space in that scene. By looking at the picture, noticing changes, and drawing it in their head, the child will enjoy spatial perception as if it were a game based on observation, discrimination, memory, and imagination.
A magical picture book that lets you see the world in a new way
『Wall』 repeatedly shows opposing concepts such as inside and outside, right and left, small and large. These opposing concepts are simple and clear at a glance. However, this amazing picture book makes us realize that the same picture can be interpreted differently depending on which direction we look at it. Even though it is the same place, if we look in different directions, parts that were previously invisible become visible. When we learn about things we haven't seen, our thoughts change. The picture book “Wall” will help us look at the world in a new way and make our lives richer and happier.
Sensuous formative beauty created only with lines and colors
Artist Jeong Jin-ho translated three-dimensional space onto two-dimensional flat paper in a surprisingly original and sophisticated composition. The formative beauty of expressing the entire and part of space using only straight lines and curves and showing changes in position using only two colors, yellow and blue, is outstanding. The three-dimensional space is captured entirely within the picture book, so the moment anyone looks at this picture book, a three-dimensional world comes to mind. The concept of just one friendly-looking character moving along a ‘wall’ that can feel hard and cold is
It makes it impossible to pass by any scene in vain. By connecting 'wall', an architectural material, and 'perspective', which is the framework for thinking and judging, deep topics are engraved in our minds through simple, short writing and sensuous pictures.
