Following the ninth installment, the tenth city we'll explore is none other than Seoul, our nation's capital and undisputed number-one city in Korea. \n\n▣ Seoul, South Korea—What Kind of City Is It? \nSeoul, the capital of the Republic of Korea where we live! Located in the western center of the Korean Peninsula, Seoul is the administrative, financial, and cultural heart of the country. Although it makes up only 0.6% of Korea's total land area, it is home to over 13 million of the nation's more than 50 million people, making it a massive metropolis. People have lived in Seoul since the Neolithic era, and the city has carried roughly 2,000 years of history ever since. During the Three Kingdoms period, Baekje, Goguryeo, and Silla all fought to control the Han River basin. During the Goryeo Dynasty, thanks to its favorable geography and convenient transportation, it was highly regarded and known as 'Namgyeong,' meaning 'southern capital.' From the Joseon Dynasty onward, it has served intensively as the nation's capital. Since Joseon times, Seoul has been the hub of politics, economy, and industry, and even today it remains the center of the country's key facilities, with Korea's transportation network developed around it. After the devastation of the Korean War, as the nation rapidly rebuilt, Seoul faced serious traffic congestion, housing shortages, and environmental problems—but it overcame these challenges to become a truly international city. Once a small city north of the Han River, Seoul has continuously expanded and is now a vast metropolis spanning both sides of the river. Having hosted the 1988 Seoul Olympics and the 2002 Korea-Japan World Cup, this global city and 'open capital' continues to grow to this day. \n\n▣ Information Inside the Book \n'World City Exploration Comic History Knowledge' includes an information page related to the story at the end of each comic chapter, effectively delivering knowledge about the history and culture of world cities. 'Treasure Hunt in Seoul 2' features a 'Seoul at a Glance' section that uses maps, photos, and text to highlight Seoul's important places, as well as a 'Seoul Basics' page covering the city's administrative districts and major facilities.
