Mudambo, an elephant living in Africa, is asking for help with a toothache. The De Sotos, who have never traveled abroad before, happily agree and set off on what promises to be an enjoyable trip to Africa. But things don't go smoothly from the start. Mudambo's teeth are so badly decayed that treatment will take several days, and they also need to find a stuffed walrus tusk of the right color. To make matters worse, a rhesus monkey who holds a grudge against Mudambo ends up kidnapping Doctor De Soto.\n\nBut in his moment of crisis, Doctor De Soto thinks of his beloved wife and manages to escape, returning safely to their lodgings. He also finds a walrus tusk at a museum. Mudambo's tooth treatment resumes, and the skillful Doctor De Soto crafts a brand-new-looking molar from the tusk he obtained. In return, he receives a huge sum in gold coins, and promises his wife they'll enjoy a pleasant trip for a while.\n\nWith its clear story structure and unique cast of characters, along with rich, humorous expressions and bold lines, this engaging tale gives children the joy of reading.
