As a child, he received painting lessons from his older brother Irwin. He studied at the City College of New York and later studied art at the National Academy of Design. Starting in 1930, he contributed cartoons to The New Yorker and Life magazine, and after turning sixty, he reinvented himself as a children's book author, quickly gaining worldwide acclaim. Sylvester and the Magic Pebble won the Caldecott Medal, while Abel's Island and Doctor De Soto both received Newbery Honors. His many other works include Dominic, Solomon the Rusty Nail, Brave Irene, and Shrek.
