But I'm not as good at baseball as I am at soccer.\" What a welcome answer! Nothing could be better than hearing that she's \"not as good at baseball as at soccer.\" \"Great, let's play baseball together sometime. I'll teach you!\"\n\nBut before Baseball Glove ever gets the chance to show off his skills, an incident occurs. During gym class, the students split into two teams — Team Baseball Glove and Team Toe Sock — for a game of kickball. And wouldn't you know it, Team Toe Sock wins, thanks in large part to Toe Sock's own outstanding play. Since kickball is technically a form of baseball, Baseball Glove had been certain his team would win, and now his feelings are thoroughly hurt. Even the classmates who had hesitated to join Toe Sock's team now surround her, showering her with praise — which only makes things worse. As soon as gym class ends, Baseball Glove storms back to the classroom in a huff.\n\nSeeing Baseball Glove slumped over his desk, Toe Sock asks with concern, \"Baseball Glove, are you not feeling well? If you're sick, let's go to the nurse's office together.\" But even her kind words and actions feel fake to Baseball Glove in his current mood. \"Stop showing off!\" he snaps, pulling his hand away from her and letting out everything he'd been holding in. \"You're good at kicking because you're a sock, not a glove!\" And then he adds something he really shouldn't have: \"Get away from me, you smell bad!\"\n\nAt Baseball Glove's words, Toe Sock's face turns bright red. Baseball Glove immediately realizes his mistake, but the words are already out — there's no taking them back. Will Baseball Glove be able to shake off the jealousy burning inside him and become friends with Toe Sock?\n\nThe \"Glove Elementary School\" picture book series, which believes in and cheers for the emotional strength and resilience within every child, is written and illustrated entirely from a child's perspective by author Yoo Seol-hwa, who has long used picture books to pose thoughtful questions to children and adults alike. This series began with a request from a child the author met at a lecture: \"Please make a picture book about my story too!\" That request sparked a desire in the author to capture the lovable qualities of all the children she had met, through the pages of a picture book.\n\nEvery child character in this series takes the form of a glove. There's the mischievous twin gloves, the timid rubber glove, the prim and proper lace glove, the capable dish glove, the steadfast boxing glove, the hungry oven mitt, the detective-loving leather glove, the clever cotton work glove, the easygoing bath scrub glove, and now the energetic baseball glove. Each child's unique personality and talents are reflected through the different uses of each type of glove.\n\nThis time, though, it's not a glove but a sock who shows up — and she lights the fire of jealousy in Baseball Glove, the reigning baseball star of Glove Elementary. Sure, it's one thing that Toe Sock is naturally good at kickball since she's a \"sock,\" after all — but she's also got a wonderful personality with nothing to complain about, and that makes it even harder for Baseball Glove to bear. Even when Baseball Glove snaps at her for \"smelling bad,\" she just laughs it off: \"That's okay, I'm a sock, so I might smell a little sometimes.\" And when she's nominated as team captain for the big kickball match between Glove Elementary and Sock Elementary, she readily gives the honor to Baseball Glove instead. Every word and action from Toe Sock scratches at Baseball Glove's nerves and stirs up his insecurities. \"What's with this kid? Am I the only one being petty here?\" he wonders.
