Description
The soup started with a large pot, water to put in the pot, and three rocks. However, no matter how soup is made with rocks, seasoning it with salt and pepper is basic. How about adding a little carrot in there? What about cabbage? Even if you add just a little bit of beef, it becomes a great dish for a rich family's table. All you need is a little barley and a glass of milk to prepare a dish that even the king will like.
During the war, a group of soldiers stop by the village to appease their hunger, but the people do not welcome the soldiers. Even before the soldiers arrive, they hide all their food and look hungry. Sensing the feelings of the villagers, the soldiers decide to use their wisdom and boil rock soup. And the term 'stone soup' stimulates people's curiosity and makes them look forward to what kind of soup will be created, while also making them take out the ingredients to complete it.
This work won the Caldecott Honor Award in 1948, and it tells a story that makes us realize that ultimately what is needed to boil rock soup is the hearts of people who want to let go of greed and share together. In a time when wars were frequent, it was a warm heart that could comfort those suffering from poverty and hunger. And they realized that if you change your thoughts generously, your mind will become richer.
