Description

Siddhartha, the greatest spiritual teacher of our time
A novel that encapsulates Hermann Hesse's interest in and affection for Eastern thought

If all desires and all impulses in the mind were silenced,
The most intimate thing within existence, that which is no longer the self,
That great secret was to be awakened.

Siddhartha, the son of a Brahmin—the highest caste in India—renounces his worldly life with his friend Govinda to attain enlightenment, despite his father's objections. He has the opportunity to practice under Shakyamuni, the founder of Buddhism, but realizing that he must find enlightenment on his own rather than through the Buddha's teachings, he leaves Govinda behind and sets off on his journey alone. Subsequently, until he reaches middle age, Siddhartha meets a woman he loves and a wealthy merchant, indulging in worldly desires; however, upon discovering that he has become tainted by them, he abandons everything and becomes a boatman.

*Siddhartha* is a work published by Hesse after he received psychiatric treatment following a period of severe depression that made creative writing nearly impossible for almost a year and a half. It can be viewed as a kind of religious coming-of-age novel that poetically sublimates the spiritual heritage of both the East and the West, capturing the yearning for eternity and the will for transcendence that delves deep into the human inner self through a simple and lyrical style. Delicately portraying the anguish between formalized religious doctrines and the self-sufficient introspection of the soul, the work suggests that there is no single fixed path to self-discovery and challenges the fixed notion of blindly relying on philosophy, religion, or any other belief system.
