To the parents who read this book
"100 Great People Who Shined in Korea" is a song with an easy and cheerful melody that has been consistently loved since its release in 1989, with countless children singing along. From Dangun, who founded Gojoseon, to Lee Jung-seop, a modern Western-style painter, you can meet many figures as you follow the flow of our country's history.
However, there are various controversies regarding whether the figures appearing in the song are indeed great figures who brought glory to Korea, and whether the lyrics are accurate. For example, there are disputes over the appearance of figures unrelated to national glory, such as the "traitor Yi Wan-yong," or fictional characters from a novel like "Yi Su-il and Sim Sun-ae," as well as claims that the story of Mun Ik-jeom being the first to introduce cotton seeds is not true.
Presumably, since it is a song, it was likely intended to match the rhythm of the lyrics, or to include a contrasting villain to emphasize one person's outstanding achievements, or to include a well-known character—even if it is a protagonist from a novel—rather than a lesser-known figure, in order to approach people more easily and familiarly.
This book was created with the hope that children would gain at least a general understanding of who the figures in the songs are and what the lyrics mean, rather than simply memorizing and singing the lyrics by heart. As this is the first history picture book children with limited background knowledge are seeing, detailed explanations regarding various controversies have not been included to ensure their level of comprehension. Instead, to allow children to encounter historical figures without distorting the facts, the focus has been placed on the lyrics, providing explanations that are as simple and concise as possible. Please keep this in mind, and if your child asks, "Why is this person a figure who brought glory to Korea?", I hope you will answer flexibly, tailored to their level of understanding.
I hope children will enjoy their first encounter with our history through this book, singing along excitedly to the songs.
