Book introduction

Parents tell Charlie to cook Lola's meal. But she says Lola is picky beyond her words. She says she doesn't like beans, carrots, potatoes, mushrooms, spaghetti, eggs and sausages. And they say they never eat tomatoes. Charlie comes up with a good plan for Lola. Carrots are called ‘orange mulberry eggplant’, and mashed potatoes are called ‘cloud fluff.’ The bean dish is ‘green drop’ and the fried fish is ‘bada yam yum’, which sea mermaids eat. So what is a tomato?

Thanks to her brother's imagination, Lola has a fun meal time. This is a good book to read with parents who are sweating every meal time. This book was selected as the best picture book of the year by the British Library Association.

publisher review

“Mom, I don’t eat onions and green onions. “I don’t even like carrots.” The fight between a mother and her child begins from the moment the meal is set.
A mother's desire to feed her picky eater a balanced diet becomes heavy and difficult every meal time. Children's insistence on only foods that suit their tastes seems to be no different from our children or the Lola from fairy tales. However, Charlie's efforts to feed Lola evenly seem a little different from other mothers.

Because Lola refuses to eat carrots, beans, potatoes, or fried fish, Charlie comes up with a good plan. Changing the names of foods to something nice. Now the names of the foods Lola didn't want to eat have changed to Orange Mulberry, Green Bell, Sea Yam Yum, and Cloud Fluff. Just like those foods that make your mouth water just by hearing their names. If it's the sea yam yum that mermaids eat under the sea, if it's the green drops that fall from the green country, or if it's the cloud fluff that hangs on the top of Baekdu Mountain, even children will want to taste it out of curiosity. While eating, Lola will be able to go to Jupiter, visit the sea where mermaids live, and climb to the top of Mt. Baekdu.

Charlie and Lola's story shows what it's like to eat truly delicious food with children. It is not about force-feeding or coaxing and comforting children, but rather entering the children's world, having fun with them, and letting them eat on their own. Although Charlie is quirky, he truly understands his innocent and curious younger brother. So it's really fun and exciting to change up your little brother's meal times.
If our mothers also imitate Charlie's method, our children's meal time, which was difficult because they had to wrestle with their mothers at the dinner table, would become sweet and fun like a dream. I hope that this book, which depicts the amazing world of food, will make mealtimes the most enjoyable time of the day for all children.
