Inside the Book
Everyone knows that raising a toddler is hard. But how many people have ever stopped to think about how hard it is for toddlers to live 'as toddlers'? Weaker and smaller than anyone else, toddlers face countless challenges from the world every single day. Given that they are constantly battling the following four difficulties, it's truly no small feat for toddlers to behave like little angels:
1. The modern environment is very unfamiliar to toddlers.
2. A toddler's brain is unbalanced.
3. Acting out is a normal part of a toddler's development.
4. Toddlers can react intensely depending on their temperament.
- Chapter 1. Four Challenges Toddlers Face, p.30
The 'Fast-Food Rule.' Though it may sound a bit simplistic, this method is truly the golden rule for talking with someone who's upset. I can promise you — the Fast-Food Rule works wonders, whether you're dealing with a toddler, an older child, a teenager, or even a cranky spouse! Simply put, the Fast-Food Rule means that before you state your own opinion, you first repeat back the other person's feelings.
- Chapter 3. The Fast-Food Rule, p.71
Toddler-ese turns a parent's complex words into simple messages that even an upset child can understand. Once you know these three simple techniques, you can easily translate whatever you want to say into Toddler-ese:
1. Use short phrases.
2. Repeat yourself.
3. Reflect the child's emotions in your voice and gestures.
- Chapter 4. Toddler-ese, p.105
Over the next three years, you'll constantly be shaping your child's behavior — encouraging them when they do well, correcting them when they don't. The author found it helpful to compare this parental duty to a traffic light: turn on a green light for behavior you want to continue ('Go!'), a yellow light for annoying behavior ('Be careful!'), and a red light for behavior that's dangerous or unacceptable ('Stop!'). Parents the author knows refer to these green, yellow, and red lights simply as good behavior, bad behavior, and dangerous behavior.
- Part 3. Understanding Toddler Behavior, p.133
