Description
"Mischievous ㄱㄴㄷ" is a beloved Korean alphabet picture book (often called a "Ganada picture book," similar to an ABC book) first published in 2005. Ganada picture books are a classic genre that nearly every child learning Hangul encounters at some point — enjoyable for babies just starting to talk all the way up to children learning to read. Since its original release, "Mischievous ㄱㄴㄷ" has been cherished by readers again and again, and now it's being introduced in a brand-new board book edition perfect for babies around 18 to 24 months old who are just beginning to talk.
Board books are smaller and lighter than hardcover editions, making them easier for little hands to hold and enjoy. The corners have also been rounded for safety, so babies can hold and explore the book on their own. With a size that fits perfectly in small hands, babies can dive into the story with ease.
Most importantly, "Mischievous ㄱㄴㄷ" is designed for interactive reading between parent and child. On each page, a parent can ask the child to find objects that start with the same consonant sound, creating a fun, back-and-forth reading experience.
**14 Hangul Consonants Woven into a Mischievous Day**
Illustrated in the author's signature simple yet warmly familiar Korean style, this picture book follows a mischievous child through a day filled with all 14 Hangul consonants, from ㄱ to ㅎ.
The story begins when the child spots a cat — fittingly, the first page starts with 'ㄱ' (giyeok): "Peeking, peeking — did the cat go into that hole?" The child looks for the cat, but finds nothing inside the tree hollow.
Next comes 'ㄴ' (nieun): "Who's there, who? You scared me!" Out of the tree hollow pops a friendly dokkaebi (goblin), and the child's playful romp begins. Now friends, the child and the dokkaebi sing songs, splash in water, and blow bubbles together — even a sudden rain shower doesn't stop their fun.
In the middle of this fantastical play, the child briefly returns to reality — thanks to Dad's booming voice: "What are you doing running around without clothes in the rain?!" The child shouts back, "Dad's being silly!" and dashes off to their room, where the imaginative play continues.
"Now let's really, really have fun!" The child dances on the bed, bangs out a marching band beat, and rides a toy truck with a rumbling "tul-tul-tul" sound. After playing to their heart's content, the child unfurls a fluttering blanket, wraps up inside it to read a book, yawns, and drifts off to sleep as the story ends.
By following this mischievous child through a day of play, readers naturally learn all 14 Hangul consonants along the way. The book is also wonderful for reading aloud — the sentences are kept short and simple, using not only nouns like 'cat,' 'dokkaebi,' and 'bubbles,' but also playful sound words like 'peeking peeking,' 'pitter-patter,' 'drizzle drizzle,' 'splish-splash,' and 'flutter flutter,' all carefully rhymed to bring out the joy and rhythm of the Korean language. Even familiar ideas are expressed in fresh, fun-sounding ways.
**A Ganada Picture Book That Feels Like a Puzzle and a Hidden-Picture Game**
"Mischievous ㄱㄴㄷ" is a picture book that delights both children who already know their letters and adults alike. That's because, beyond teaching Hangul, it truly shines as a story with rich narrative and playful charm — the very qualities that make picture books special.
On the surface, there's the fantastical adventure the child goes on with the dokkaebi. But look closer, and more stories reveal themselves within the illustrations. Sharp-eyed readers will notice a picture of a dokkaebi on the child's bag early in the book — but once the real dokkaebi appears, that image disappears from the bag. Likewise, the teddy bear who joins the child's fantastical journey was actually hanging on a clothesline, having secretly unclipped itself from the clothespins to come along. Little stories like these are tucked throughout the illustrations, waiting to be discovered.
Meanwhile, readers can enjoy a fun search-and-find game, spotting objects that all start with the same consonant sound on each page — the joy comes from figuring out just what you're looking for as you search. For example, on the page introducing 'ㅁ' (mieum), the text reads: "Everyone gather 'round — let's splash in the yard!" Hidden throughout this scene are objects starting with 'ㅁ,' like a 'hat' (moja) and 'swim goggles' (mulangyeong) — easy to find at first, but there's always more waiting to be discovered.
