★ A Work That Lets You Fully Enjoy the Illuminations of the City
In winter, especially around the year's end, cities sparkle with dazzling lights that brighten the long nights. While the first half of the picture book beautifully unfolds a twilight scene created by natural light, the latter half reveals a spectacular display of streetlights and decorative illuminations shining throughout the city.
One streetlight flickers on. Its especially warm and cozy glow shines down like a spotlight on a child, a bearded old man, and a dog. A window in a building across the way lights up too, as if signaling the start of the city's dazzling night. In the next scene, the streetlights lining the road come on one by one, and windows light up throughout the city. From there, beautiful and elaborate decorative lights illuminate the streets, with car headlights and traffic signals also playing their part in brightening the city.
The child, who earlier felt sad about the day ending, is soon captivated by the city lights and cries out joyfully, "It's as bright as daytime!" Lights decorating buildings, lights adorning Christmas trees, lights sparkling in shop windows, and lights brightening homes—all mobilized to illuminate the winter night—evoke a festival of light, much like the Illuminarie displays. While nothing beats going outside to see the twinkling lights in person, this book alone is enough to enjoy a festival of light right at home. Enjoy this radiant, heartwarming celebration of light...
★ A Picture Book Featuring Diverse Races and Festivals, Drawn from the Author's Own Experiences
Every year at Christmastime, we imagine spending joyful moments with family and friends. Gathering together to share delicious food, exchange gifts, and sing songs while celebrating—this time of year is more exciting and joyful than any other. Having Christmas in winter feels like a blessing for everyone.
In Winter Twilight, the footsteps of people moving through the city streets seem lively and full of energy. Whether heading to a toy store, a gift shop, a theater, or home, everyone seems to be headed somewhere different, yet you can feel that they're all caught up in the excitement of the Christmas season. A gentleman in a scarf, a woman in a hat, a retired acrobat, and even an alien from the planet Zatha Flatte appear, indirectly expressing the joy of the season as if reciting lines from a play.
Meanwhile, there are also children out on the streets enjoying the height of the festive season. Children marching with nine candlesticks represent the Jewish festival of lights, Hanukkah, while children dressed in black and green carrying seven candlesticks represent Kwanzaa, a celebration created by African Americans. So just where is this city where so many different people come together in harmony? A street sign in the illustrations reading "Greenwich Village" suggests that the setting is New York. Since Uri Shulevitz has indeed lived and worked as an artist in New York, one can guess that this book reflects his own experiences living there.
With poetic text and rich, vivid colors, this work beautifully captures a wintry city scene, making it a wonderfully warm picture book for children eagerly awaiting Christmas.
▶ Plot Summary
A child sets out for a walk with a dog and a bearded old man. Reaching the riverside, the child watches the sun set beyond the horizon and remarks sadly that the day is ending. But upon returning to the city, the streets appear lively and full of energy. People walk with light steps, thinking of the gifts they've bought and their trip home. As time passes from evening into night, lights come on throughout the city, and the glow filling every corner gives the streets a festive atmosphere. Shopping districts are decorated with Christmas trees and dazzling ornaments, and children carrying candlesticks wander through the alleys, celebrating the year-end festivities. Seeing the city filled with beautiful lights, as bright as daytime, the child throws open their arms in delight.
