The journey of these two caterpillars becoming butterflies offers dreams, comfort, and encouragement to all who seek their true selves, and gives courage and hope to those standing at the edge of despair to begin again. ▣ Story Summary The Striped Caterpillar discovers a towering column made of countless caterpillars and, hoping for a different kind of life, begins to climb it. There, he meets the Yellow Caterpillar. The two give up climbing the column and come back down, spending their days freely eating grass, playing joyfully, and growing closer in love. But as time passes, the Striped Caterpillar becomes increasingly curious about what lies at the top of the column, and eventually leaves the Yellow Caterpillar to climb it once again. Left alone, the Yellow Caterpillar wanders aimlessly until she meets an old caterpillar spinning a cocoon to become a butterfly. Inspired, the Yellow Caterpillar dreams of becoming a butterfly herself, spins a cocoon, and is reborn. Meanwhile, the Striped Caterpillar, having trampled over other caterpillars to reach the top of the column, is shocked to find nothing there at all. At that moment, the Yellow Butterfly appears before him. The Striped Caterpillar follows her, spins his own cocoon, and becomes a butterfly.
