Written and Illustrated by Akiko Hayashi Akiko Hayashi is known for her delicate depictions of everyday, seemingly small moments that leave a quiet yet deeply moving impression on readers. She is widely praised for portraying children in the most authentic, childlike way. Her stories reflect a deep understanding of early childhood psychology, and her realistic depictions stem from careful, patient observation. Her picture books are thoughtfully composed, with each story element placed just so to capture young readers' interest. Breaking away from the common belief that young children cannot follow a story, Hayashi helped expand the world of picture books into one rich with narrative depth. Having loved looking at pictures since she was very young, Akiko studied drawing at an artist's studio. The joy and wonder she felt looking at pictures as a child stayed vivid even into adulthood, inspiring her to become a picture book artist so she could share that same joy with children. She has taken countless photographs of children — capturing their smallest gestures and perfect poses — and keeps them in a special drawer in her studio, which she calls the "magic drawer" that has inspired her picture books ever since. After working at the Manabe Hiroshi Design Office, she went on to study art seriously at the Faculty of Education, Yokohama National University, nurturing her dream of becoming an illustrator. She began her career as an illustrator drawing spot illustrations for magazines such as Mother's Friend, published by Fukuinkan Shoten, during her college years. She published her first picture book in 1973 and later became one of Japan's leading illustrators, even being selected to contribute to All in a Day, an international collaborative work for world peace led by Mitsumasa Anno. The children who appear in her books are based on her own nieces and nephews, who have always been her biggest supporters and most devoted readers. The familiar warmth in her illustrations brings a sense of realism that resonates with children, drawing from everyday moments such as meeting a new baby sibling for the first time, the first day of kindergarten, moving day, bath time, and running errands. To heighten the dramatic charm of these everyday stories, Hayashi uses cinematic techniques — zooming in on objects that catch a child's eye or boldly omitting details, much like a film director would. Her picture books have been translated into Korean in 13 volumes to date, and despite their distinctly East Asian artistic style, they resonate warmly with children in Western countries as well. Her works Paper Airplane (1973) and Isuel's First Errand (1976) introduced readers to a new kind of picture book artist — one capable of telling a complete story through illustration alone. Loved by children across Asia and around the world, Akiko Hayashi's artwork is filled with warmth, humanity, and the pure innocence of childhood. She currently lives near the Yatsugatake forest in Karuizawa, Japan, continuing her work at her own gentle pace.
