Description
A masterpiece graphic novel that captures the hidden layers of relationships! Back in print after 14 years, by popular demand!
"Beautiful and tender." —Guillermo del Toro, director of The Shape of Water
Before it even premiered, this dialogue-free animated film became the talk of the town. Catching audiences' attention at the Sitges Film Festival, the European Film Awards, and the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, it went on to be invited to the Cannes Film Festival and nominated for the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature—cementing its place at the center of word-of-mouth buzz. Robot Dreams has won over audiences with its poignant depiction of the fleeting time shared between a dog and a robot.
As The Hollywood Reporter put it, "There are feelings that can be felt without a single word being spoken"—and this book is filled with scenes that resonate more deeply than any line of dialogue ever could. Told entirely through lines, shapes, and simple exclamations, this story delicately captures emotions and lingering feelings that words alone could never express.
A fleeting time spent leaning on one another, and the bittersweet imaginings that begin only after parting
"A beautiful love letter to a past friendship." —El País
The graphic novel Robot Dreams portrays the brief moment of friendship that came to a dog and a robot. Living in a quiet city, Dog builds a robot with his own hands, and the two become the best of friends. But on a summer trip to the beach, they meet an unexpected parting—the robot rusts in the seawater and becomes unable to move. Not knowing what to do in this sudden situation, Dog returns to the city to search for a solution. But just as hope arises that he might see his friend again, he returns to find the beach has already closed for the season, leaving him unable to get back in. And so, with the robot left behind on the beach, the seasons pass.
From a family of ducks to a duo of anteaters, to a snowman and penguin who arrive with winter, Dog tries to find a friend who truly fits him, but building a new friendship proves far from easy. Meanwhile, various encounters come and go for the robot left alone on the beach. Even relationships that slowly wear him down give him just enough hope to keep going.
Holding onto only the memory of their happy, fleeting time together, Dog and Robot remain unable to reach each other. Will the two ever meet again? And even if they do, can this friendship endure?
An exploration of love and friendship—feelings that can burn bright, only to break in an instant
A delicate and deeply honest exploration of friendship and love
"It captures every moment of parting so vividly." —Loud and Clear
Every goodbye arrives without warning. Whether it's an inseparable best friend, a first love etched into memory, or even a beloved stuffed animal once held close every night at bedtime—whether by choice or by circumstance, the moment to part ways eventually comes. Of course, every farewell is deeply painful. But those who have made it through that tunnel know something: that the experience helped them grow.
Perhaps that's why readers who close the final page of Robot Dreams find themselves thinking of their own past farewells—to properly say goodbye to that innocent yet genuine feeling, and to leave that ended relationship behind so they can move forward.
