Description
Hoping to spark a butterfly effect that helps children understand the global water shortage from their own perspective! "Clear Skies, No More" gently but honestly portrays a serious global environmental issue through the eyes of a child. It vividly introduces the harsh reality of water scarcity in Sudan, Africa, where villages must even go to war with neighboring communities just to protect a well.
In stark contrast to the Korean family of Malgeum-i, who use water carelessly without a second thought, the Sudanese siblings Arian must cross a dusty, scorching desert under the blazing sun just to carry water from a muddy puddle. At the very moment Malgeum-i lets water run freely while brushing her teeth, the Arian siblings are cooling their exhausted bodies with giraffe urine after a long day of hauling water.
This meaningful book helps children truly grasp how severe the water shortage is on the other side of the globe in Africa, serving as a starting point for interest in global environmental issues. Although it's a creative picture book aimed at younger readers, its depth of thought is anything but shallow. The story, inspired by a TV documentary, adds a sense of realism, and as readers follow the growing awareness of the main character, they'll find Malgeum-i transformed into a little environmental activist.
From a child who didn't understand the value of water to one who worries about Arian and his village and collects rainwater, Malgeum-i becomes a wonderful global environmentalist practicing a sense of community. We highly recommend this book, hoping that more children like Malgeum-i will emerge across Korea, Asia, and the whole world.

Author's Note
One late night when my drawing wasn't going well, I was flipping through TV channels and my eyes landed on a scene of the parched African landscape. Africa's water shortage... I thought I already knew something about it, so I watched without much reaction at first. But I was shocked to see the situation was far more serious than I had imagined. Completely absorbed in the program, I suddenly heard the sound of water dripping—drip, drip, drip. I rushed to the kitchen to turn off the faucet, and that scene became the moment that inspired the character Malgeum-i in this book.
That doesn't mean I've become some great environmental activist, but at the very least, I no longer waste water thoughtlessly. Turning off our faucet properly won't immediately free people in Africa from water scarcity. But just as my small change came about, I hope that the many parents and children who read this book might come to share the same pure and warm heart as Malgeum-i.
Is it too much to hope that this book becomes an opportunity to recognize that environmental problems are never just "your problem" or "my problem," but something the whole world must think about and solve together?
