Description: A pair of lark parents build their nest in a meadow on a ranch, but a mole digs a tunnel right next to their nest, making it impossible for them to sit on their eggs. The father lark flies into the forest and asks a wolf to chase the mole away. Of course, the wolf won't agree so easily! The wolf promises to drive the mole out — but only if he's given plenty of delicious food to eat first. Thanks to the lark's clever wit, the wolf ends up going to the village and eating his fill of roasted goose, lightly grilled ham, meat dumplings, and cream cheese. Then, feeling thirsty, he begs for a cool glass of beer as well. This story is based on a famous Polish folktale. The author reportedly spent a long time thinking it over after being asked to write "the funniest story in the world." The illustrations in this book are all drawn in profile, much like paintings on ancient Egyptian walls. The many characters that appear — from the silly-looking wolf to the weary lark — are all shown from the side. The wolf, holding his full belly after eating so much, is irresistibly adorable.
