Description
"The fastest, strongest, cleverest, and bravest rabbit — that's the number one rabbit."
Canicle, Koenicle, Kinicle, Cownicle, and Cunicle are five bunny friends who live together in a cozy underground home. The five friends love to slide and tumble and do somersaults together, share a single carrot or cabbage leaf piece by piece with kindness, and snuggle up close to sleep when they're tired.
One day, a big rabbit with a magnificent mustache named Hopfelpop appears and asks which of the five rabbits is the "number one" rabbit. Confused, the bunny friends ask what he means, and Hopfelpop explains, "The fastest, strongest, cleverest, and bravest rabbit is the number one rabbit," and suggests they hold a contest to find out. So, which rabbit will turn out to be number one?
♠ Not Good at Studying? Maybe They're Great at Running!
Adults often set a single standard and praise and favor children who meet it as "the best" or "number one," while dismissing those who don't as "not good enough" or "nothing special." Children quickly learn to imitate this thinking — wanting to play only with the "best" kids, and leaving out those who don't measure up.
But everything in the world is constantly changing. What was once a mountain peak can become a valley over time through the shifting of the earth. Today I might be number one, but tomorrow a friend might take that place, and the day after, someone else entirely. Hopfelpop, the rabbit in this story, resembles adults who pressure children to become "number one." Fast Canicle, strong Koenicle, clever Kinicle, and brave Cownicle are all praised as wonderful number one rabbits, while Cunicle — who doesn't fit Hopfelpop's standards — is made to feel like nothing at all. Worse, the four praised rabbits declare that they are the best and refuse to play with the rabbit who isn't. But when trouble strikes, it's Cunicle — the one dismissed as "nothing" — who solves the problem, and the five rabbits become close friends once again.
♠ A World Where Everyone Can Be Number One When We Work Together!
Just like the five rabbits in this story, our children each have their own unique gifts — some are great at math, some are fast runners, some paint beautiful watercolors, and some are wonderfully considerate of others. Imagine how unhappy these children would be if adults insisted, "Why can't you be good at this instead?" and pushed them to excel only in the areas adults value most.
After reading Everyone Is Number One, you'll find yourself wondering, "So who is really the number one rabbit?" Perhaps what truly matters in life isn't becoming "number one" — but working together to create a world where everyone can be number one.
