Description

Artificial intelligence is not a natural disaster. It is something we create together. The future is not predetermined; we can shape it. Gathering collective intelligence to ensure that AI operates for humanity is what we can and must do. _From the Preface, page 8. What Yann LeCun wanted to convey is this: "Current AIs like ChatGPT are merely pattern-matching games, and true intelligence requires the ability to 'understand' the world." He believes that the issue with current AI, specifically large language models, is that they do not truly understand the world but merely replicate language patterns. The essential capability needed is a 'world model,' which is an innate sense of 'how the world works' that already exists in your mind. _From Lecture 1, page 62. I also believe that jobs will inevitably continue to decrease in number. This is because AI was created for that purpose. Just as washing machines were made to reduce the effort of washing clothes and dishwashers were made to lessen the burden of washing dishes, AI is designed to reduce and automate work. Therefore, if the introduction of AI does not result in any reduction in jobs, it means that AI has been poorly designed. The reduction of jobs is a predetermined outcome. _From Lecture 1, page 116. The entire Chinese industry is presented with a natural opportunity to transition to high-value-added industries. Not only will industries related to electrification, such as solar panels, batteries, semiconductors, and control systems, advance, but traditional manufacturing will also evolve into technology-based industries alongside electrification. Electrification makes automation significantly easier. One of the major pillars supporting China's recent strong rise is indeed 'electrification.' Electrification is inseparable from physical AI. _From Lecture 1, pages 133-134. ChatGPT is the fastest service in human history to gather users. Before it, Instagram and TikTok were the fastest. However, ChatGPT attracted users at an unprecedented speed that made these platforms seem slow. It was launched on November 30, 2022, and within two months, it surpassed 100 million users. In just two and a half years, it reached 800 million users. The internet took 13 years to gather that many users. A single company, OpenAI, amassed users seven times faster than the entire internet. _From Lecture 2, page 188. The saying that 'every time large AI companies announce new models, dozens of startups close down' is not without reason. The 'sudden capabilities' of artificial intelligence only manifest when computing power, training data, and parameters grow to a massive scale, which small ventures or mid-sized AI companies cannot afford to invest in. Large AI companies monitor in real-time how users are utilizing AI. Once a certain threshold is reached, they incorporate that into their service model. Thus, every time a model is announced, many startups providing services in that field suddenly vanish from the market. _From Lecture 3, page 306. What went wrong? Where are the traps hidden? According to Peter Thiel, the one correct person cannot be checked by anyone else because he is the only one who is right. "People are not entities to whom important decisions can be entrusted." According to Karp, when the West is wrong and begins to make absurdly incorrect decisions, there are no means to check it. He argues that authoritarian states are dangerous, and to counter them, we must strengthen our defense capabilities and develop technology with minimal regulations to gain an advantage before we can establish ethical and legal boundaries regarding AI. So, who can say, 'Now that we have technological superiority, let's establish ethical and legal boundaries!'? Will that time ever come? _From Lecture 4, page 341. If the U.S. seeks to create and monopolize the best frontier model to maintain its competitive advantage, China responds with rapid application across all industries and a push into the Global South led by open-source initiatives. The competitive landscape between the U.S. and China in the AI domain is becoming increasingly acute. In this scenario, the global solidarity for AI regulation will inevitably lose its ground. If the U.S. drastically lowers regulations for competition, other countries cannot simply prioritize regulations. The harms of AI do not discriminate by country, yet humans are divided and eyeing each other warily. It is indeed a regrettable situation. _From Lecture 4, page 379. Therefore, the AI transition of the Korean industry must fundamentally be based on three premises: lack of money, lack of people, and lack of data. This means that any policy that fails to address these three issues will not be effective. These three must be solved together because they are interlinked. For instance, without money, you cannot hire people or gather data. Even with money, if there are no people, progress cannot be made. And even with both money and people, if there is no data, it is futile. These three issues must be addressed together. _From Lecture 5, page 413. Discussions about a basic AI society will intensify. Productivity will rise sharply, but if left unchecked, jobs will disappear, and wealth may concentrate in the hands of a few. AI could become a curse disguised as a blessing. Technology is becoming increasingly complex, making it harder for the average person to understand. Only a few companies can develop the best AI. National AI literacy is becoming crucial. _From Lecture 5, page 455.
