She began studying picture books while illustrating for the monthly magazine Mother's Friend. She won the 2nd Japan Picture Book Award for What Day Is Today?, the Sankei Children's Publishing Culture Award for Bath Time Is Fun, and the 21st Kodansha Publishing Culture Award for Eunji and the Fluffy One. Chick was her first new picture book in 18 years, illustrated for a text written by her husband, Kiyoshi Soya. This story depicts the kind of quarrels and reconciliations that commonly happen between sisters at home. When Sun-i comes home from kindergarten, she finds that the flat-nosed doll she and Jung-a were supposed to play with together is missing. Sun-i gets angry, assuming her little sister Young-i must have taken it to play a prank. But Young-i is actually in the hospital, recovering from surgery.
