"Teacher-Made Jwaljwal Reading" is a set of teaching materials created by the Seoul-Gyeonggi Special Education Teachers' Research Society after years of thoughtful effort to design excellent Korean language lessons. For children who need more time to learn to read, teachers themselves wrote the texts and created activity worksheets, aiming to teach with quality materials and varied methods. When these reading materials were used in actual classrooms, students engaged with the lessons more enthusiastically and their reading comprehension improved.
While no single textbook can perfectly fit every child's unique needs, this book is designed to enrich the Korean language learning experience for students who struggle with reading. "Teacher-Made Jwaljwal Reading" is organized into sets from Level 1 to Level 4, with a total of 14 volumes planned upon completion. Notably, the illustrations and editing throughout the book were made possible through the generous talent donations of many contributors, making this a book filled with heartfelt care.
▶ 5 Key Features of "Teacher-Made Jwaljwal Reading"
1. The book is composed of various activities designed to help students read short passages and understand their content. Any student at the sentence-reading level can use this book to practice reading comprehension. It is suitable for elementary, middle, and high school students in special education classrooms or schools, students with learning difficulties who struggle with reading, and multicultural or overseas Korean students who are just beginning to learn Hangul in Korean language classes.
2. Each level is organized according to reading comprehension level. The goal of Level 1 is to read and understand 1–2 sentences, while the goal of the final Level 4 is to understand the overall structure of a text. As the levels progress, the length of the passages, the difficulty of sentences and vocabulary, and the complexity of the questions all increase.
3. Students are exposed to a wide variety of writing genres. Reading comprehension is developed through everyday narratives, practical informational texts, literary works (poems, stories), song lyrics, diary entries, and expository writing. Teachers wrote the texts themselves, selecting topics covered in Korean language textbooks and the elementary curriculum for grades 1–3. When picture books or poems were chosen, the full text was included so that students could experience the complete literary work. However, if a passage was too long to understand easily, it was divided into sections for learning before students appreciated it as a whole.
4. While the primary focus is on reading comprehension, various activities are also included to help students develop listening, speaking, and writing skills together. This is because reading comprehension is not improved by teaching reading skills in isolation—it is best developed through an integrated approach with other language domains. The book includes sections such as "Text Introduction," "Fun Reading," "Story Close-Up," "Vocabulary Storehouse," "Korean Language Conventions," and "Show What You Know" to keep lessons active and engaging.
5. Considering the needs of children who learn to read at a slower pace, the levels have been finely divided so students can study thoroughly at their own speed. A variety of materials at the same level have been prepared so that teachers can choose and present content suited to each student's age and characteristics.
▶ Understanding the 6 Sections Created by Teachers Through Hands-On Teaching Experience
"Text Introduction" presents the full passage to be learned. Even though fluent reading may still be difficult at this stage, short, well-crafted passages are presented alongside illustrations to help make reading enjoyable.
"Fun Reading" offers a variety of activities related to the passage to help students easily grasp its content. This section includes activities such as reading in different ways, understanding the overall content through pictures, and listening/speaking activities related to the content.
"Story Close-Up" consists of repetitive practice exercises that use sentence structure to help students grasp the content. The passage is broken down into sentences, and questions are provided about the content to be answered.
"Vocabulary Storehouse" selects difficult words from the passage and offers activities for learning word meanings, writing practice, spelling, and vocabulary...
