Description
A new picture book from Kim Young-Jin, an author who deeply understands the daily lives of parents and children today.
We live in the so-called era of 'involved dads.' Even on television, we often see fathers actively taking part in childcare. But what about reality? Countless fathers still leave early in the morning and come home late at night. Rather than spending happy time with their children, many struggle just to see their child's face even once a day. For most families, a father and child sharing warm, loving moments together feels more like a fantasy seen only on TV.
"Does Dad Think of Me at Work?" is Kim Young-Jin's newest work, capturing the everyday life of our families in vivid, realistic illustrations. In his previous book, "Does Mom Think of Me at Work?", the author quietly conveyed a child's deep longing to be with their working mother, and a working mom's struggle to balance career and parenting, through a day in their lives. In this book, the everyday life and relationship between a father and his child bring a fresh and touching perspective, different yet equally moving.
"There's so much I want to do with Dad, so why does he always come home so late?"
It's early morning. As Dad is leaving for work, Green-i, who had been asleep just moments before, comes running to the front door. Just seeing Green-i lights up Dad's face — but not Green-i's. For several days now, Dad has left before Green-i wakes up and come home only after Green-i has fallen asleep. It's only after Dad promises to come home early today that Green-i's face finally brightens too. Green-i and Dad even decide to keep track of who thinks of the other more throughout the day. After such a happy start to their day, how will Green-i and Dad's day end? Will Dad be able to keep his promise?
A Child Who Grows to Resemble Their Father, a Father Who Grows Through His Child
After a rare, happy morning spent together, Green-i and Dad each board different colored buses and head off to different places. Dad starts his day at the office, and Green-i at kindergarten — different tasks, but their days turn out to be remarkably alike. Not only that, but they share the same love of seeing and experiencing things firsthand, and even the same hearty appetite for food.
This book presents Dad's and Green-i's daily routines side by side in matching scenes. In each paired scene, readers will notice how alike father and son are — in gesture, tone, and action, just like two peas in a pod. Furthermore, we can sense how Green-i is growing socially through what he inherits, sees, hears, and learns from his father, while Dad works harder each day, driven by thoughts of the child he loves and must care for. Even though they can't be together every moment, we feel the healthy growth of both — the child who longs to grow more like his father, and the father who matures through his child.
So even though the story ends with Dad, who came home late despite his morning promise, quietly tucking in his sleeping son, closing the book leaves a warm feeling in your heart. You naturally find yourself hoping that both Green-i and Dad, having lived this day well, will greet tomorrow with the same good spirits.
A Balanced Harmony Between the Realistic Present in the Story and the Hopeful Ideal on the Cover
Through the scenes inside, this book portrays the ordinary daily life of a child and his father realistically, without exaggeration or embellishment — while at the same time, through its cover, it depicts the hopeful future we should all be able to enjoy.
The front and back covers of this book bring great comfort to families who wish to spend more time with their fathers. Just seeing Dad and his child joyfully tumbling together (front cover), and the child running out to greet his father coming home early (back cover), fills the heart with quiet satisfaction. This book's cover carries a hope: that every father and child in this world can step away from their busy daily lives, even briefly, to enjoy simple, everyday happiness together.
