Book Introduction
A princess in a seaside kingdom eats too much pie and comes down with a terrible stomachache. When the worried king asks what will make her feel better, she tells him that having the moon would surely cure her right away. So the king commands his royal advisors to fetch the moon at once. The advisors, having no idea how such a thing could be done, fret and panic. That's when the court jester comes up with a brilliant idea: simply bring the princess the moon she wants. It turns out the moon she has in mind is a small, round piece of gold, no bigger than her thumbnail. Once she has the moon around her neck, the princess feels better right away and goes out to play in the garden. That night, as she watches the moon rise again in the sky, she has a thought of her own: just like a new tooth grows in after a baby tooth falls out, a new moon must have grown back too.
About the Author
Author: James Thurber (1894-1961)
Thurber held a deep skepticism toward the rapidly changing modern world. Through his many works, he sharply satirized how civilization stripped people of their individuality, reducing them to faceless figures. In addition to Many Moons, he wrote many meaningful children's books, including The Great Quillow and The White Deer.
Illustrator: Louis Slobodkin (1903-1975)
After graduating from an art school in New York, Slobodkin worked as both a sculptor and illustrator. He won the Caldecott Medal in 1944 for Many Moons. After turning forty, he began writing children's stories of his own, many of them playful and whimsical, including The Space Ship Under the Apple Tree and The Three-Seated Space Ship.
Translator: Hwang Kyung-joo
A graduate of the Department of Clothing and Textiles at Chungnam National University, she currently works as a reporter for the film magazine Roadshow.
