About the Author: Born on June 12, 1929, in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, as the second daughter of a Jewish family, Anne Frank moved to Amsterdam, Netherlands, in 1933 to escape Nazi persecution. However, after the Nazis occupied the Netherlands, she and her family went into hiding starting in 1942. Their concealment did not last long — on August 4, 1944, someone betrayed their hiding place, leading to their arrest. Anne was later taken to a concentration camp, where she died of typhus in March 1945. A girl who dreamed of becoming a great writer and journalist, Anne poured her honest and witty observations into her diary, capturing the unique experience of hiding as well as the universal struggles of adolescence — its emotions, worries, and dreams. After the war, in 1947, her diary was published by her father, Otto Frank, the only member of the family to survive. Originally published under the Dutch title 'Het Achterhuis,' meaning 'the hiding place,' The Diary of Anne Frank has since been translated into many languages and continues to be cherished by readers around the world — just as Anne herself once hoped.
