One spring day, the author's third-year high school son—class president and always ranked first or second in his grade—announced that he was dropping out. The moment he stamped his withdrawal papers, his younger sister, a second-year high schooler, quit school too. The two siblings shut themselves in their rooms, refusing to even speak with their parents. 'Where did it all go wrong?' The author, a confident teacher with seemingly perfect children, simply couldn't understand what had happened. At the depths of despair, she discovered coaching. Driven by the desperate hope of simply saving her children, she began studying parent education and communication skills, eventually earning certification from the Korea Coach Association along with about 20 other credentials. Today, she travels across Korea and the world, lecturing to parents and teachers with a heart full of remorse and passion. Her family's old motto was 'SKSK'—do as you're told, no questions asked. She constantly checked in on, instructed, and commanded her children, always saying 'Hurry up! Quick! I'm busy!' She never once tried to understand what her children were truly feeling, simply assuming that because they were successful, they always would be. In this book, the author honestly confesses her shameful past as an 'unqualified parent' and shares in detail how she rebuilt her relationship with her children. She also offers a friendly guide to various coaching methods—including communication techniques—that anyone can practice. Since coaching is about helping someone find their own answers, a coach should never resort to commands or instructions. The most important coaching skills are acknowledgment, respect, support, and praise. Praise, in particular, is essential for nurturing self-esteem and stands as the most crucial coaching technique. If you're not used to praising, it can feel awkward at first—learning to praise takes practice, much like learning a new language. Rather than scolding a child for what they can't do, teaching them to notice and praise what they do well gives them the strength to grow and improve. Having cultivated hope out of deep despair and pain, the author stands today as a true 'success story' of emotional coaching. Now, both of her children unhesitatingly name their mother as the person they respect most in the world. It's hard to imagine the days when they had shut themselves off from the world—today, they live happy lives as confident members of society and proud students. And so the author dares to say: 'I am the happiest parent in the world.' She hopes readers, too, will learn to read and support their children's emotions—because when parents trust and wait, happy changes follow for their children.
