Open Korean is a textbook developed for the Korean language classes of the International Exchange Volunteer Network, sponsored by the Korea Foundation. Since 2005, volunteer Korean language education experts at the Korea Foundation Cultural Center have run this free Korean language education program for foreigners residing in Korea. Each year, about 2,000 students from roughly 80 countries participate, and currently around 250 foreign students attend weekly two-hour classes ranging from beginner Hangeul classes to advanced level courses.
This textbook is based on materials that have been used directly in that program for the past seven years, revised and edited to carefully select high-frequency beginner and intermediate grammar points and to strengthen language skills across all areas. It is organized to naturally connect speaking, writing, listening, and reading in class, and includes 'Expanding Expressions' and 'Wings' sections to help learners build deeper language ability and fluency.
In addition, a teacher's guide has been published alongside this textbook to help teachers use it more effectively, expanding what had previously been only partial teacher resource materials into a complete set covering both beginner and intermediate levels. The guide includes friendly lesson plans, detailed class procedures, real classroom scenarios, and a variety of classroom activities and worksheets, all aimed at creating a well-rounded Korean textbook that satisfies both students and teachers. Great care was also taken to include abundant, beautiful illustrations that set this textbook apart from existing materials and make it more approachable and friendly for students.
1. Classroom activities for each grammar point are included together with a separate activity workbook ("A Peek into Korean Classes," activity sheets for beginner and intermediate levels sold separately)
2. Real classroom log examples provide valuable insight into student responses and classroom atmosphere
3. Detailed lesson plans cover essential Korean grammar, including how grammar points are introduced, presented, practiced, and applied
