This science picture book tells the story of our bodies in a way that lets children ages 3 and up stretch their imaginations and grow an even stronger curiosity about the world around them. On the very first page, a black circle appears—soon revealed to be a drain hole. Next comes a showerhead dotted with tiny black holes... and so the book opens with holes from everyday objects that children easily recognize from their surroundings. Then, on the following pages, two tunnel-like holes appear again—leading into a journey through the holes in our own bodies: the nose, mouth, ears, eyes, and pores, shown one after another. The book answers the natural question of what each of these holes is for, and gently helps children realize that, just as a hole connects one side to another, the holes in our body serve as passageways connecting us to the world around us. Informational texts often run the risk of becoming long-winded and dull. But this book avoids that pitfall with short, rhythmic, conversational lines like, 'What's this?' 'Ah, a drain hole!' 'And what about this?'—making reading a real pleasure. The illustrations are lively and full of humor throughout, and the simplified anatomical diagrams of each body part let children grasp the structure of the human body at a glance, without the need for lengthy explanations. Children around age 3 show an endless, powerful curiosity and interest in everything they see, hear, and experience. Introducing good science picture books at this age plays a vital role in how children explore and learn about the world. Yet, ironically, children often don't enjoy picture books that are labeled as full of scientific information—they approach them with excitement and curiosity, only to be met with dry explanations or overwhelmed by too much information at once. With this in mind, this book was carefully created to spark and sustain children's natural curiosity from start to finish.
