■ About the [Yellow Umbrella Traditional Culture Picture Book] Series
A picture book series co-created by novelist Kim Hong-shin, author of Korea's first million-selling novel The Human Market, and early childhood education expert Dr. Lim Young-joo!
This traditional culture picture book series combines novelist Kim Hong-shin's delightful storytelling with children's literature expert Lim Young-joo's rich linguistic sensibility, offering both joy and learning for children. As moms, dads, and children read and enjoy these stories together, they'll naturally come to reflect on Korea's unique culture and the wisdom of their ancestors.
How should we teach children about our traditional culture? Should we send them to a traditional scholar in Cheonghakdong? Or hand them a book packed with dense explanations?
'Ha-ha, ho-ho, giggle, giggle, and a heartwarming moment too!' Show your child a picture book full of fun and emotion! Give them the chance to simply feel and connect with their culture!
'Tradition' didn't just fall from the sky one day. Nor did it suddenly spring up from the ground. Traditional culture handed down from our ancestors is something we ourselves are renewing and carrying forward today!
Read the 〈Yellow Umbrella Traditional Culture Picture Books〉 and Unfold Dreams, Talents, and Hope
Kindergarten and early elementary years are when emotional preferences take shape. That's why it's so important during this period to give children frequent opportunities to encounter Korea's unique holidays, customs, folk games, and traditional tools, helping them grow familiar and comfortable with their own culture. If children develop a deep appreciation for their heritage during this time, they can grow into global talents while nurturing dreams, talents, and hope for the future.
Building Character, Social Skills, and Learning Ability Through 'Understanding Tradition'
Character, social skills, and self-directed learning ability are the most emphasized goals in kindergarten and elementary education. While each of these can be cultivated through varied and focused education, 'understanding tradition' is said to offer a wonderful three-in-one effect, nurturing all of them at once. That's why author Kim Hong-shin, after much thought on how to help children feel closer to and better understand traditional culture, came up with the idea of telling delightful stories rooted in everyday life.
■ Story Summary: I Love Hanbok, Our Beautiful Clothes
Who will get dressed in hanbok first? A hilarious hanbok-dressing mix-up ensues!
Today is Grandmother's 70th birthday celebration. From the morning, Won-i's family is busy getting dressed in hanbok to prepare for the big party. While Mom and Dad get ready first, older sister Won-i and younger brother Geon-i have a contest to see who can put on their hanbok first. But sister Won-i cheers 'Hooray!' first — while proudly wearing a boy's hat meant for her brother! Meanwhile, Geon-i is wearing his sister's underskirt instead of his own hanbok pants!
When Mom sees the children have accidentally swapped their hanbok, she bursts into laughter and gently teaches them the proper order and way to wear hanbok.
At the 70th birthday party, with the whole family gathered together, Grandfather breaks into a wonderful song, and Grandmother and the children all dance joyfully together.
