Description
A heartwarming story about friendship from the celebrated picture book author Anthony Browne.
One morning, Mr. Smith goes for a walk in the park with his young daughter Smudge and their dog Albert. That same morning, Mrs. Smythe also goes for a walk in the park with her young son Charles and their dog Victoria. Mr. Smith, a working-class father, along with his daughter Smudge and their dog Albert, meets Mrs. Smythe, a middle-class mother, along with her son Charles and their dog Victoria, in the park. Together, they represent a cross-section of British society. What will happen in the park between these adults, children, and dogs who each represent different worlds?
After a little while, Albert and Victoria become playmates, chasing each other happily around the park. But Smudge and Charles seem a bit awkward about becoming friends. And it's uncertain whether Mr. Smith and Mrs. Smythe will ever become friends at all — the two of them sit apart, looking in opposite directions.
"Let's Be Friends" is a picture book written and illustrated by the British author Anthony Browne. In his earlier book "A Walk in the Park," he portrayed a family of gorillas who meet in the park but struggle to become friends. Through these stories, Browne raises the question: why is it so hard for people to connect and play together? He asks readers to consider what true friendship really means.
One of the delights of this book is discovering the hidden and unexpected images tucked into each scene. Look closely at the trees and you'll find they resemble faces — and in some scenes, you might even spot Santa Claus or Tarzan hidden among the branches! Finding these surprising details is part of the fun.
For children used to picture books that flow in a single direction from beginning to end, this book's structure — told from four different perspectives — offers a refreshing and eye-opening new way of reading.
In the end, Mr. Smith and Mrs. Smythe never quite become friends, and it's time for each family to go home. But before they part, Charles gives Smudge a single yellow flower. Smudge carefully places the flower in a glass jar and treasures it. Amid the cool, distant relationships of the adults, this story gives children a chance to reflect on their own friendships — and encourages them to be brave in making new friends.
A Heartwarming Friendship Story from Award-Winning Picture Book Author Anthony Browne
A Girl and a Boy Become Friends
One day, Mr. Smith takes his daughter Smudge and their dog Albert for a walk in the park. Mrs. Smythe also takes her son Charles and their dog Victoria for a walk in the same park. The two families end up sitting on the same bench. Mr. Smith and Mrs. Smythe sit at opposite ends of the bench, each looking in a different direction. But before long, their dogs are already playing together, and Smudge and Charles gradually warm up to one another.
Unlike the adults, who can't seem to open up, Smudge and Charles become friends as they swing together and climb the monkey bars. Along with their dogs, Charles and Smudge share a wonderful time together. Just before they have to part, Charles picks a yellow flower and gives it to Smudge. Though they're pulled back home by their parents, the two children have already become friends in their hearts.
A Picture Book Both Adults and Children Can Enjoy
Although Anthony Browne's works are picture books, their themes are never lighthearted. Many of his books address social issues such as alienation and the lack of communication between people. "Let's Be Friends" is no exception.
Adults often find it difficult to become friends — there's simply too much to consider: who the other person is, what they do, how much they own, and so on. Children, however, are different. They don't need to know everything about someone before becoming friends. All it takes is playing together and feeling a connection. For people who feel isolated from one another, the book suggests that opening our hearts the way children do may be the answer. Anthony Browne conveys this message beautifully through...
