Description
As sweet and delicate as melting cotton candy, The Strange Guest returns in a fresh new look, alongside The Strange Mother, as part of Baek Heena's beloved 'Strange' series. In short, this revised edition is 'a Baek Heena picture book you simply must see again.' Just placing the two gorgeous covers side by side is a feast for the eyes. It's the same story, yet it feels brand new. This new edition comes in a compact size that's perfect for reading together while lying down, and easy for little hands to hold. Newly added visual details and carefully refined scenes bring the story to life with even greater clarity and vividness, offering readers fresh emotions and a renewed experience.
Of course, the process wasn't easy. The author carefully re-selected the scenes for this edition and meticulously adjusted the colors and lighting to match the emotional tone and mood of the story. She searched for the perfect paper to bring the story to life, and there were days when printing had to stop because the result didn't match her vision. After all this trial and error, the result is a book with even richer physical quality and narrative depth. We hope that Baek Heena's 'Strange' world, now blooming at Storybowl, will bloom as brightly as spring flowers on a clear day, and that the hidden effort and sincerity of the author and everyone involved will touch readers' hearts deeply.
★ Did a book fairy sprinkle cotton candy dust over it? This revised edition of The Strange Guest has transformed remarkably. On the cover, the white goblin baby Cheon Dal-rok floats cheerfully and mysteriously on a fluffy, cotton candy-like cloud of five colors, gazing out at the reader. The sensational sparkle effects radiating around Dal-rok highlight the goblin character's supernatural powers.
★ A fun surprise element using a belly band is also included. Peel back the band to reveal Dal-rok's playful, changing expression underneath. Inside the band, you'll also find vivid sketches from the author's early storyboards. Seeing how these sketches were brought to life in the finished scenes reveals the creator's meticulous care. The author's signature and a drawing of Dal-rok on the inside flap of the band are a small gift to readers.
★ The purple endpapers, symbolizing the mysterious sky, are followed by pages featuring dark storm clouds and colorful clouds respectively. These visually represent the emotional journey of the siblings before and after meeting Dal-rok, marking the story's beginning and lingering impression.
★ The carefully adjusted colors in each scene add depth and atmosphere to the background, clearly conveying the narrative depth and spatial context of the story. The characters' varied expressions and movements are also portrayed with such vibrant energy that they seem ready to leap right off the page.
"I wanted to show the kind of heart that's willing to help someone, even a stranger, without expecting anything in return." — Baek Heena, from an interview with The Hankook Ilbo
The Strange Guest, Melting Like Pink Cotton Candy
With a round, white, adorable face, wearing a tiny traditional patchy hat and a baby garment with long, flowing sleeves, the heavenly Cheon Dal-rok is a baby goblin. Riding in on a cloud, Dal-rok's home is up in the sky. But no matter how high in the sky a goblin lives, Dal-rok is still, at heart, just a baby. He tears up, then hastily stuffs bread into his mouth; he throws a fit, then moments later is all smiles again as if nothing happened. Loud tantrums, turning the house upside down and flooding it with water — is that really just something baby goblins do? Even one ordinary child running around the house for a little while can cause complete chaos, as if a bomb went off. And now, with no mom or dad around, two siblings have to look after this wildly unpredictable baby goblin all on their own — now that's no easy task.
Dal-rok has a special power: he can change the weather however he feels. When he's angry, it turns scorching hot; when he's happy, it snows. But since he's just a baby, he's not very good at controlling it yet. The weather swings back and forth dozens of times a day. In this book, a whirlwind of Dal-rok's weather antics unfolds — blazing heat, sudden snow, thunder and lightning, pouring rain, and rainbows, all one after another. Just looking at Dal-rok's innocent, ever-changing expressions is enough to make you laugh out loud. It might even make you want to express your own feelings as freely as he does — especially when your own bottled-up emotions have piled up like storm clouds. Perhaps that's why, even after closing the book, you'll find yourself still smiling...
