Why does spelling matter?
Language is made up of speech (sounds) and writing (letters), and "spelling" refers to the rules for writing down what we say. It's a social agreement that has been established and followed for a long time so that we can communicate through writing. Young children mainly communicate through speech, but once they start elementary school and begin learning to read and write, communicating through writing becomes increasingly important. If children don't learn proper spelling at this stage, it becomes difficult for them to correctly understand Korean, communicate effectively with others, or accurately express their own thoughts. When this happens repeatedly, writing becomes more and more burdensome, making it harder to achieve good grades, build good relationships, and function well in society.
What's the most effective way to study spelling?
Spelling study should begin with understanding that the sound and the written form of words can differ. In Korean, some words like [bada] (sea) have matching sound and form, but many words—like [gugeo] (Korean language), [sutgarak] (spoon), and [jota] (good)—sound different from how they're written. There are also many words that sound the same but have completely different meanings, such as [beorida]/[beollida] or [eotteokhae]/[eotteoke]. Even adults often get confused, and there are many loanwords that are frequently misused. It might seem overwhelming to memorize it all, but you don't need to memorize every single word. The author of this book, writing teacher Kwon Gwi-heon, recommends "copying by hand" as the best method for studying spelling. By practicing writing words just as you would practice handwriting, and copying how they're used within sentences, children will naturally build solid spelling skills before they know it.
Why is repeated writing practice the best way to study spelling?
Because spelling rules are simply too difficult and complex—even for adults to fully understand. If children had to first understand and memorize all the rules, then apply them every time they write, no one could enjoy studying spelling. The reason the author recommends "copying by hand" is that it's the easiest and most effective way to deeply engage with vocabulary. By repeatedly writing out words you use often, you naturally become familiar with how they're written. Once children can accurately write down the words they already use in everyday speech, studying spelling becomes more and more enjoyable. That's why it's best for parents to have their children practice writing a variety of vocabulary repeatedly before starting elementary school, so they become comfortable with spelling early on.
Does learning proper spelling really improve reading and writing overall?
Reading and writing are connected to everything a person does. Children who read and write well tend to do well in school and in their studies, and adults who read and write well tend to achieve more in society. Especially with the prolonged effects of the COVID-19 pandemic contributing to declining literacy and reading comprehension among children, strong reading and writing skills have become more essential than ever for modern life. While many people worry about this, both parents and children still tend to see writing as something intimidating. But writing doesn't have to be difficult. Expressing your thoughts and feelings in sentences is writing, and even putting everyday conversations into written words counts as writing. If you and your child dedicate just 2 pages a day for 50 days to diligently copying the words and sentences in this book, 『Elementary Spelling 50-Day Copywriting Challenge』, we're confident your child will become a confident speller and writer before you know it.
