Embarrassed by underwear? Learn the right facts about underwear and wear it well to be healthy and stylish! As soon as you open the first page, a curious cat named Joy runs off with a pair of panties in its mouth. Children who have always been too shy to ask about underwear will find themselves following Joy, turning the pages one after another. Before they know it, they'll be drawn into the world of underwear that Joy leads them through, discovering that underwear isn't dirty, embarrassing, or something to be ashamed of—rather, it's an important piece of clothing that absorbs sweat in hot weather, keeps us warm in cold weather, and protects sensitive skin and private areas. They'll also learn why it's important to change underwear often to stay clean. Along the way, children will explore the differences between boys' and girls' underwear due to physical differences, and learn that if anyone ever tries to look at their underwear, they should tell a parent right away.
"Panties: The Story of the Underwear We Wear Every Day" is a wonderful nonfiction picture book that thoroughly answers children's questions about underwear. Rather than simply presenting facts, the book uses simple, child-friendly language, following Joy through various times and places for an entertaining introduction to the subject. Through images of Joy wearing a comically outdated petticoat or an almost torturous corset, children get a fun overview of the history of underwear. They'll also encounter unfamiliar but important pieces of traditional Korean hanbok underwear, such as dari-sokot, sok-sokot, gojaengi, and muzigi skirts. The book also introduces various specialized types of underwear, such as padded underwear for hip protection or fire-resistant underwear.
The main text, which reads almost like a poem, adds to the fun of reading. Lines like "Yesterday, zebra-striped panties. Today, red ladybug panties," showcase author Kim Mi-hye's skillful use of rhythmic wordplay to make the story even more engaging. The vibrant, expressive illustrations on every page also make the book a joy to look at. Joy transforms page after page—becoming a noble lady while wearing a corset, a superhero while wearing panties over pants, and even a runaway thief dashing off with a pair of gojaengi in its mouth. Illustrator Yu Kyung-hwa hides plenty of playful details throughout the book, such as an exaggerated scene of Joy eating too many sweet potatoes and letting out such a powerful fart that its panties stretch to the limit—details that are sure to capture children's attention.
As children turn the pages, they'll find themselves completely absorbed in this fascinating story about underwear. And by the time they close the book, they'll have all their questions about underwear answered, gained a deeper appreciation for the importance of their own bodies, and learned to practice good habits when it comes to getting dressed.
