Description
What's the delicious secret behind Gubeom Waterfall that can instantly chase away the sweltering summer heat?
On a summer day so hot that even the crayfish in the stream turned red, three childhood friends—Kim, Lee, and Park—set off to find a mysterious ice at Gubeom Waterfall. Crossing winding rivers and climbing jagged mountains, the children rescue a cat in danger, and the cat leads them to the legendary waterfall.
There, they find a waterfall of naengmyeon (cold noodles)—chewy noodles floating in icy, refreshing broth—along with the mysterious ice they'd been searching for. Just as they're happily slurping up the noodles, the true owner appears: a tiger as big as a house! The three children realize, to their horror, that the delicious noodles they'd been enjoying were none other than the tiger's own naengmyeon—'Horaengmyeon.'
Furious that the children touched his precious noodles, the tiger threatens to eat them all. But at the last moment, the cat that saved them earlier steps in to protect them—revealing that it wasn't a cat at all, but the tiger's youngest cub, the last of eight! Having followed the children ever since the village, the cub helps clear up the misunderstanding. The tiger forgives them and even lends them some of his magical ice.
Safely back in the village, the three children throw a cool naengmyeon feast, sharing the refreshing noodles with the whole village to celebrate surviving the long, hot summer together.
A New Summer Legend to Cool You Down: 'Tiger and Naengmyeon'
In this picture book that feels like listening to a traditional folktale, author Kim Ji-an turns back the clock to a traditional setting of thatched roofs, tiled houses, and stone walls, unfolding an old story reimagined for today's readers. With the tiger—one of Korea's most iconic mythical creatures—and a classic lesson about good deeds bringing good fortune, the narration unfolds like a grandmother's bedtime story, evoking the warmth of traditional Korean folktales.
Yet the author's signature adorable, lovable characters, stylish panel compositions, and lively, dynamic storytelling make this timeless tale feel fresh and exciting for today's young readers, drawing them eagerly into the children's cool summer adventure.
Featuring naengmyeon—the quintessential taste of summer—as its central theme, Horaengmyeon is the perfect summer picture book to cool down the heat of a scorching day with a brand-new legend.
