Description
The quiet, tender secret of how a group of cats survive winter by secretly moving into the home of a grandmother who dislikes cats.
On a bitterly cold winter night, a group of cats sneak into an old woman's house to escape the freezing weather. Luckily for them, the grandmother's eyesight has grown weak with age, so she never notices a thing. This is a fortunate turn of events, since the grandmother happens to dislike cats.
While she cleans, cooks, and watches television, the careful cats live right alongside her, and every day she mutters to herself, "How lucky that I don't have cats." The cats do everything they can to stay hidden and quiet. When she starts cleaning, they freeze like cat figurines on top of the dresser, or stretch flat on the floor and suddenly become a small rug.
While she cooks, the somewhat scatterbrained grandmother is quietly helped along—the cats turn off the gas burner for her and sneak in ingredients she needs for her recipes. It turns out these cats are surprisingly sweet and caring. And when she turns on the television, they gather one by one by the fireplace, eyes wide, to watch along with her.
One sunny day, the cats climb up to the roof to bask in the sunlight, as they haven't in a while. Meanwhile, the grandmother feels an odd emptiness in the house and decides to take a short walk—alone. But she doesn't come home that day. The cats search every corner of the neighborhood for her, but she's nowhere to be found.
Several days pass before the grandmother is finally brought home with the help of others, looking quite different from before. What happened to her? This heartfelt story of an unusual shared home builds to a hidden twist and a deeply moving ending.
With "No Cats Allowed" signs plastered all over her gate, and a habit of scolding any cat she meets on the street, the grandmother's dislike of cats seems oddly fierce—almost strange enough to make you wonder if there's a story behind it. And it turns out the cats who wandered into her home may have understood more than we do. Watching them quietly and devotedly care for her while staying out of sight, we feel their warmth pass straight into our own hearts.
The grandmother, both crotchety and endearing, will make you laugh one moment and feel a pang of tenderness the next. And in time, we come to learn the truth the cats seem to have known all along: the grandmother's resentment toward cats was really just grief for the grandfather who passed away before her.
It's impossible not to smile at the grandmother, unaware that cats are right beside her, insisting how lucky she is not to have any. After getting lost and finding her way home, she gradually forgets more and more—until even her sorrow fades. Her days take on a heavy yet gentle sense of peace.
In the end, her house is completely transformed into the most wonderful cat home in the world, and even the sky seems to take on a cat-like glow. The grandmother throws open her window, sits on the wooden floor, and spends her days with the cats just as she always has—her face full of smiles.
"There was just one thing Grandmother never forgot: how much Grandfather loved cats." — from the text.
