Description
"No matter how much you study, if your grades aren't improving, it's because you don't understand your brain!"
A high-efficiency brain method that can turn even an average student into a top 0.1% achiever.
Some children study late into the night, working incredibly hard, yet still fail to achieve good grades. Meanwhile, other children get plenty of sleep and don't spend all their time studying, yet still earn excellent results. This may seem deeply unfair, but the difference actually comes down to whether or not a child has developed a "brain for studying."
The author, a nationally certified brain trainer who has written numerous books on brain science, explains that through years of studying the brain, they came to realize that a "brain for studying" truly does exist. Drawing on established brain science research as well as years of data collected while providing learning consultations to students, The Brain Science of Studying reveals exactly what this "study brain" is—and how anyone can develop it.
According to the author, two key factors determine a child's study brain: "working memory" and "metacognition." Working memory can be thought of as the mental workspace where information is processed—the larger and more efficient this workspace, the higher the likelihood of academic success. Metacognition, meanwhile, refers to a higher-order form of awareness: the ability to objectively assess what you do and don't know, almost as if observing yourself from the outside. Numerous studies, along with the author's long-term observations, show that high-achieving students consistently have strong working memory and high metacognitive ability.
Part 1 of the book explores the concepts of working memory and metacognition—the true foundation of a "study brain"—in detail, and introduces training methods to strengthen both.
Building a study brain starts with belief. Our brains have the remarkable ability to improve the more we use them—meaning that, depending on how we train them, real physical changes are possible. By trusting in this neuroplasticity and learning to use the brain efficiently, anyone can become a better student.
In Part 2, drawing on deep expertise in brain science, the author dismantles common misconceptions about studying that many of us have long believed to be true. The book also lays out essential, evidence-based strategies for building a brain optimized for learning, organized into five key areas: sleep, exercise, memory, brain characteristics, and study environment.
By applying the insights in The Brain Science of Studying and correcting long-held habits of brain use, readers can dramatically improve their academic performance—and achieve efficient, satisfying results in any field of study.
