Description

● The Right Way to Help Someone The first customer who enters the laundromat in the dark early morning is Mira. Mira complains that her bandages have come undone and asks the grandfather to fix them. Despite his rough demeanor, the grandfather carefully and kindly attaches Velcro to the ends of Mira's bandages. Author Jin Soo-kyung chose Velcro as a material instead of the common thought of sewing with needle and thread. This shows that consideration is about the effort and thought for others rather than just convenience for oneself. Later, various ghosts visit the laundromat, each with different clothes and stories. A water ghost in wet clothes, a vampire who must have his feathers in order to maintain his dignity, and a werewolf whose clothes tear every full moon—all these garments reflect the personalities and situations of the ghosts. The grandfather grumbles and complains while fixing the ghosts' clothes, but he puts in his best effort as they wish. Through the grandfather's actions, readers come to understand that when helping someone, it is important to empathize with their feelings and assist them accordingly. ● Those Who Need Help but Are Hard to See is a sequel to . Jin Soo-kyung had the intention of writing a sequel from the beginning, hinting at the second volume at the end. But why ghosts? Ghosts generally refer to the deceased. Without directly explaining the separation from loved ones, the mere existence of ghosts can visually convey sadness. Additionally, ghosts are near people but cannot approach them. They are invisible and need help, yet find it difficult to ask for assistance. The ghosts in come with their own stories and struggles. They show their external problems like torn and wet clothes, but beneath that lies a need for care and comfort. The grandfather fixes and tends to the ghosts' clothes, soothing their hearts as well. conveys that comforting someone does not require grand actions or words; simply reaching out a hand is enough. ● Relationships That Continue in Memory and Heart The laundromat grandfather works diligently from early morning. Amidst his busy schedule, he takes time to make clothes for his grandchild. "I just need to attach the arms now," he says. This sentence carries a sense of anticipation that completion is near, but also a feeling of urgency as the grandfather's time is limited. One early morning, the laundromat, which should be lit, is dark and closed. The ghosts linger outside the shop, only to realize that the grandfather is no longer there. For young readers, the unfamiliar and frightening concept of death has come to the grandfather. However, the story does not directly explain the grandfather's death or emphasize sadness. Instead, through the clothes he left behind and the last scene with his grandchild, it quietly shows that love continues in different forms even after someone has departed. This allows young readers to naturally feel that separation and death are not the end, but rather a continuation of relationships in memory and heart.
