Description: When we're young, we love big things. We're impressed by big things, and we wish for big things. That's how we grow up—until one day, the world starts saying something different: big isn't good. Big isn't desirable.
I never took dance lessons as a child, but I did once get stuck on a swing. I was playing on the baby swings with some older kids, and I couldn't get off. I was the only one who got stuck like that. Because of the size difference between me and my peers, I was treated like an adult. Told to grow up, act my age—when I was simply a child.
That day, I learned that my body wasn't the right size. That it didn't fit in. The adults around me stopped seeing me as a child who could innocently make mistakes. My own childhood experience was far less blatant than what this girl in the story goes through. But the words I heard, the thoughts I had—they aren't so different from hers.
She sits at the crossroads where the bias of having to seem 'grown up' meets the bias of having to be 'thin.' She faces judgment wrapped in prejudice, which hurts not only in the moment but leaves a mark for a lifetime. And yet, she loves herself enough to hand back the unkind, unhelpful words she receives.
I hope this child can be a guide, someone many people can watch and follow on this journey—especially those of us who are big-bodied and dark-skinned. In color psychology, pink is associated with gentle love, warmth, and care. Pink flowers symbolize purity, joy, playfulness, and happiness. The background color of this book is meant to say that girls deserve all of these things too.
A child's body is not a problem to be fixed. That day on the playground, my body wasn't the problem either. What needs to be fixed is the bias we carry within us. I want to wrap my arms around that child. Part of her is me, and perhaps part of her is you too. And I want to tell her: no matter what happens, you deserve every joy and every bit of care this world has to offer.
