We Are Family
Even though we look different and think differently, we are all family. Every person and animal on this planet is family. Even if they're not our blood relatives, even if they're not the animals we personally raise, we should cherish them as if they were. Even though our faces and skin colors differ, we are all one kind of living being, one kind of human, and we should never discriminate. Any living being on this planet deserves our care and love. We can all become family. We can all become friends.

Artist Jeon Yi-su, Growing Steadily Amid Widespread Attention
First introduced on SBS's Gifted Hands program, artist Jeon Yi-su continues to create steadily and grow as an artist. He has opened a gallery on Jeju Island, where he lives, to exhibit his work. When Do You Love My Family? was first published, the deep love for family expressed by an eleven-year-old boy became a sensation, and the book has since become Jeon Yi-su's signature work. For this reissued cover, the artist chose his painting Our House, reflecting on the question, "What does family really mean?" In an age when internet and smartphone use means that even families sitting together at the dinner table often don't look at each other, absorbed instead in browsing articles and watching videos, this book invites us to reconsider the meaning of family in modern society while conveying the artist's deep love for his own family.
A Story of Family Love, Painted by Young Artist Jeon Yi-su, Who Dreams of Being the Fastest Person in the World, Like a Cheetah!
For young artist Jeon Yi-su, everywhere is a canvas — his room, his father's car, the walls around his house, the natural landscapes of Jeju. After publishing three picture books — Taco the Little Crocodile, Wolves on the Walk, and A New Family — Jeon Yi-su immersed himself in artwork centered on family, nature, and love. This book, his first picture essay, shines with the experiences and remarkable observational skills he's gained from daily life with his family. His warm outlook on the world has deepened his love for his family and for animals in nature, and this love has grown into compassion for all living things on Earth.
In the painting Comfort, he depicts how simply having a dog that recently joined the family nearby brings him comfort. In Greatest Wish, he portrays a bear with two amputated legs, imagining what it would be like if he himself had no legs, expressing empathy and consideration for others. Yet at the same time, he's still very much a child — saying that falling asleep in his mother's warm embrace is the best feeling in the world, and scolding his little brother for peeing in random places even while helping him do it. Looking at fruit growing in an orchard, he remarks that it reminds him of families in every household diligently going about their lives, revealing his unique powers of observation. Especially moving is Mom Grown Smaller 1 & 2, painted while imagining his mother someday becoming smaller than him — a piece that reveals just how deep and vast this young boy's love for his family truly is. This depth of observation is the driving force behind both Jeon Yi-su's paintings and writing.
Learning About the World Through Nature and Animals
In this book, Jeon Yi-su says, "I learn so much by watching nature and animals." Watching a crane lower its head and move ever so slowly, lifting one foot at a time, made him wonder what his own moving body looked like. It's remarkable how observing a crane led him to reflect on his own body. From the views atop Jeju's oreum (volcanic cones), to his hope that the sea will remain clean even after summer ends, to the excitement of seeing birds building nests in the gray cityscape — nature is always by Jeon Yi-su's side, filling his heart completely. For Jeon Yi-su, nature is a precious and grateful presence that helps him cultivate his life and learn about the world.
Deep Interest and Empathy for Social Issues
This book also includes the paintings and writings Candlelight and Tadpoles. Candlelight reflects his thoughts and feelings while watching the 2016 candlelight vigils held by citizens across the country. Tadpoles captures his feelings about the Sewol ferry tragedy, which occurred shortly after he moved to Jeju Island. This painting...
