Description: A work by Anthony Browne, the author of Gorilla and Piggybook. What catches the eye most is his surrealist artwork—a sink suddenly grows a nose and mouth, a sofa transforms into a crocodile, and an armchair morphs into a gorilla. For readers who remember his earlier, more realistic style, this shift in artistic approach feels especially striking. Joseph's mom and dad have gone to the hospital to have his new baby sibling. Left alone at home, Joseph begins to notice that the objects around him look different than before. In the tidy, freshly cleaned kitchen, the kettle on the table suddenly has a cat's ears, legs, and tail. The slippers grow wings, and the soccer ball becomes an egg from which a bird is born. Left all alone, the only thing his dad told him before leaving was, 'Things will be different now.' Not knowing what exactly will change, the child projects his uneasy feelings onto the objects in the house. The strange, unsettling mood captured in these illustrations conveys emotions that words alone cannot express. Eventually, mom and dad return home, carrying the newborn baby sister. Unlike parents, older siblings are often left out of the excitement surrounding a new baby's arrival—simply because they're too young to understand what having a new sibling really means, or how their own place in the family might change. Reading this alongside the author's other picture book, Tunnel, which also explores sibling relationships, is highly recommended.
