Description: Search for Zheng Chenggong's legendary jade folding screen, hidden somewhere on the beautiful island of Taiwan! This is the 34th country featured in the World Exploration Comic History & General Knowledge series, in which our treasure-hunting hero travels the globe learning about the history and culture of each nation along the way.
Taiwan—the island that 16th-century Portuguese sailors, searching for a new sea route, exclaimed was 'Ilha Formosa' (Beautiful Island)! Taiwan is home to Yushan, the highest peak in Northeast Asia at 3,592 meters, along with roughly 200 other peaks over 3,000 meters. Active tectonic activity has blessed the island with a variety of hot springs and stunning natural landscapes. Today, Taiwan is home to 14 indigenous peoples, as well as Han Chinese who arrived from the mainland at the end of the Ming dynasty (known as 'benshengren') and those who came over with Chiang Kai-shek's Nationalist government in the 1950s (known as 'waishengren'). This rich mix of peoples has given rise to a dazzling variety of foods, earning Taiwan the nickname 'food paradise,' as well as a dynamic and open culture where Buddhism, Taoism, Confucianism, and folk beliefs all blend together.
One day, Tori and Fangyi each receive a mysterious plane ticket to Taiwan and find themselves competing to track down the jade folding screen once owned by Zheng Chenggong, revered as the 'Father of Taiwan.' Skeptical at first that the legendary screen even exists, the two slowly realize—as clue after clue comes together—that the secret of the treasure may be closer than they think.
From Taipei, the capital city where past and present meet at Longshan Temple, the National Palace Museum, and Taipei 101, to the Alishan Forest Railway (one of the world's three great high-mountain railways), to the beautiful town of Jiufen where red lanterns glow along the Shuqi Old Street steps every night—join Fangyi and Tori as they travel across Taiwan's most famous sights in search of Zheng Chenggong's jade folding screen!
When Fangyi and Tori each arrive in Taiwan on their mysterious flights, they run into each other, stunned, at Songshan Airport. It turns out that Jielun and Lunmei, the grandchildren of a wealthy Taiwanese jade merchant, have invited them both to help find Zheng Chenggong's legendary jade folding screen. With no documents or evidence to go on—only legend—Fangyi and Tori set off across Tainan (the city of Zheng Chenggong), Longshan Temple, Taroko Gorge, Yushan, and Jiufen, searching for any trace of the screen. But finding proof of something that exists only in legend proves far from easy… Will they be able to find Zheng Chenggong's jade folding screen at last?
Taiwan: an Eastern treasure island where past and present coexist! Home to the National Palace Museum (one of the world's four great museums), the 260-year-old Longshan Temple (Taiwan's finest temple), Taipei 101 (the tallest building in Asia), the sheer marble cliffs of Taroko Gorge, the wind- and water-carved rock formations of Yehliu Geopark, and the Alishan Forest Railway, one of the world's three great high-mountain railways—Taiwan truly is a treasure island where history, the present, and stunning nature all come together in harmony.
Though Taiwan's land area is only about a third the size of South Korea, it is home to a rich mix of cultures and religions, blending the traditions of indigenous peoples who have lived there since the late Paleolithic era with those of Han Chinese settlers from the mainland. Mouthwatering dishes like beef noodle soup, stinky tofu, and xiaolongbao, along with lively night markets that come alive after dark, are among Taiwan's proudest and most irresistible attractions. And with the Lantern Festival on the fifteenth day of the lunar new year, the Dragon Boat Festival at Duanwu, and countless other joyful celebrations held throughout the year, Taiwan truly is a nation of festivals.
Why not set off on a treasure-hunting journey to Taiwan, a land filled with beautiful nature, a rich blend of past and present cultures, and endlessly varied and delicious food?
