★ A Grand and Masterfully Crafted Adventure in Search of Seven Relics
Secundus is searching for seven relics that symbolize his hope for salvation: the 'rib, tooth, thumb, shinbone, dust, skull, and grave.' But he has a fatal flaw—he cannot touch these relics with his own hands, for doing so burns him unbearably. This is why Secundus chooses Boy, who appears hunchbacked due to a hump on his back but is skilled at climbing to great heights, as his companion on the journey.
Boy, in turn, carries and handles the relics, which conveniently conceal his hump and make him look like an ordinary person rather than a monster. For the first time, instead of the scorn and cold stares he has always endured, he feels warmth and gentle kindness. As Boy and Secundus journey through Paris, Avignon, and Rome in search of the seven relics, they encounter truly unexpected dangers and dire situations born of human greed.
Throughout this journey, amid treacherous deals full of deception, they display quick wit, cooperation, and courage, turning crises into opportunities and weaving a tightly plotted, thrilling tale. Scenes of theft, attack, hiding, and escape are filled with tension and thrilling vitality, while conversations and cooperation with animals, the use of supernatural forces, and remarkable agility create a mysterious and masterfully complete adventure story.
Above all, the story delicately portrays the compassion, understanding, empathy, and trust that grow between Boy and Secundus regarding each other's pain and suffering through various events, painting a genuine coming-of-age tale.
★★ A Feast of Vivid and Unique Characters
'Boy'—unnoticed, motherless, without family, who doesn't even eat. This name was given to him by Father Petrus, who supported him by saying, 'You are a miracle, Boy' and 'Never reveal yourself, Boy.' Boy cares well for animals and can speak with them, and loves climbing to high places, but in reality, he appears hunchbacked due to a hump on his back, is called a monster, and lives quietly amid people's mockery and scorn.
Boy, who had no presence or self-worth in the world, leaves the only shelter he knew—the lord's estate—and begins his journey with Secundus, experiencing the complicated and dangerous world outside for the first time. Along the way, he observes and experiences the diverse faces of humanity, gaining the chance to see himself objectively and look inward.
Meanwhile, the mysterious pilgrim Secundus, despite possessing vast knowledge and experience, superhuman agility, and remarkable judgment, is shown to be a tormented, mysterious figure haunted by hard-to-believe memories from a difficult past. The appearance of numerous animals, their varied behaviors, and their intimate conversations with Boy enrich the story's supernatural mystery and imaginative depth.
Through various characters—a woman desperate to have a child at any cost, a steward of the golden castle with endless greed, a rough girl and bandits left in a devastated world, soldiers driven into war, and monks of various kinds—the story vividly portrays the joys and sorrows of life and the complex psychology of humanity.
★★★ An Angelic Boy Who Grows Through a Difficult Journey and Learns to Accept Himself
The timid Boy, who has never had the power to decide for himself, begins an uncomfortable journey with Secundus to pray for his ailing master, the lord, and for the now-deceased lady who gave him warm memories despite others' scorn, as well as for the babies. Secundus, though difficult and mysterious, never hits, curses, or scorns Boy. Instead, he asks Boy to carry the pouch containing the relics, gives him an important role in the search for the relics, and listens to Boy's story.
Through this, instead of people's mockery and cold stares, Boy experiences the warmth of the relic pouch and, for the first time, the ordinary gaze of people who no longer notice his hidden hump. At some point, he comes to hope that he too can become an ordinary boy. But since the hump hasn't disappeared—only been hidden—every moment brings the risk that people's...
