Say "I don't like it" when you don't, and "I like it" when you do — express your true feelings honestly! Many children struggle to properly share what's on their mind. For quiet children, or those too shy to speak up first, everyday relationships with others can feel like a daily battle. From Choi Suk-hee, the beloved author of You Are a Miracle and The Twelve-Month Tree Child, comes Hello, My Heart — a healing picture book that gently encourages children (and the child within each of us) to find the courage to express their feelings, showing that doing so can open the door to resolving even the most frustrating situations. In the story, a child feels surrounded by monsters: the "Hurry-Hurry Monster" who rushes them to do everything quickly; the "Nod-Nod Monster" who never really listens and just nods along; the "Chatter-Chatter Monsters" who noisily talk over everyone nearby; the "Teasing Monster" who follows and mocks the child no matter how hard they try to get away; and the "Mine-Mine Monster" who insists that every toy, every book, and every friend belongs only to them. The child quietly describes how these monsters surround and torment them. The child wants to say, "Leave me alone," "I don't like that," and "Please really listen to me," but those words only echo inside, never spoken aloud. Caught between wanting to speak up and holding back, the child's heart slowly grows dark and heavy. Just when the child feels as stiff and cold as a stone, a ball comes flying out of nowhere. In that instant, the hard shell around the child cracks open, and at last, the child shouts out loud: "I can't take it anymore!" Once the child finally speaks the words that had been swirling inside, the monsters begin to truly listen. Where the child once simply endured others' behavior out of fear of conflict, honestly sharing their feelings leads to deeper understanding and healthier relationships. Through this story of a child who finally lets out long-hidden feelings, readers learn that building walls around resentment and anger isn't the answer — honest expression is the path to genuine, healthy connections with others. Expressing our true feelings is a challenge even for adults navigating everyday life. Not just children, but all of us may repeatedly struggle with sharing what's truly in our hearts. Through this story, may you come to appreciate the importance of expressing your feelings, and with a lighter heart, reach out first to a friend who — like you once did — has been quietly circling on the outside. If you dare to bring out your hidden feelings and take one more courageous step, wonderful things may unfold.
