Description
A dream of becoming free—free to be anything, free to go anywhere.
They say it takes twenty years for a raindrop that falls on Hallasan Mountain to reach the sea. Where is the raindrop that soaked into the earth when this song was born, and what has it become by now?
_Lucid Fall
Lucid Fall grew up by the water as a child. After some time away from it, he returned to a city overlooking a distant lake around the time he wrote 'A Dream of Becoming Water,' and he still lives by the water today. For him, the image of 'water' has always felt deeply familiar, and 'the water's edge' has always been the place where he feels most at ease. He poured the emotions he felt whenever he thought of water into lyrics and melody, giving birth to the song 'A Dream of Becoming Water.' Listening to the lyrics carried on the sound of guitar strings, you can feel the freedom of becoming water, river and sea, bird, mountain and wind, moon and stars—the freedom to be anything and go anywhere.
The comfortable, free world that Lucid Fall painted with words, rhythm, and melody is brought to life visually by Suzy Lee through her lines and colors, unfolding into a world we can see with our own eyes. Moving freely between sea, land, and sky, transforming into flower, grass, stone, and wind, readers can fully enjoy a freedom once only imaginable.
A clear blue world blooming in watercolor
In the fluid, free water, I imagine a lighter, more joyful you.
_Suzy Lee
While conceiving the illustrations, artist Suzy Lee asked herself, 'Who feels the most comfortable and free in water?' She visited an aquatic rehabilitation center and drew the illustrations based on what she observed and felt there.
In the opening scene, a child wearing supportive equipment sits by a pool. Soon the child enters the water and floats on its surface. Following the flowing current, the child ventures into ever wider spaces—into rivers, into the sea, into water itself. Before long, the child's whole body is tinged with the color of water, swimming freely. Other children begin to gather one by one, and a seal appears by the child's side. At the song's climax, water shoots up like a fountain, and the children joyfully feel the falling water, splashing and running about. They become birds soaring into the sky, then become rain falling to the earth, seeping into stone and soil. By the song's closing lines—'Again the sea, a dream of becoming the sea / a dream of becoming sand / a dream of becoming water'—we arrive at the most comfortable and free version of 'myself.' The child floats once more on the calm surface of the pool, without the supportive equipment this time, wearing a peaceful expression.
The artist chose watercolor and the color blue as the tools to clearly convey the image of water and to carry the overall mood of the picture book. However, in the opening and closing scenes, she used black and simple drawing lines to keep the focus on the child. As the mood builds, she captured the movement and shapes of water in various forms to express a sense of joy, adding depth through variations in color intensity and shading.
An accordion-fold picture book where the song flows full circle
Suzy Lee, who has continually experimented with new ways of using the physical form of a book to spark readers' imaginations, chose an accordion-fold format for this work. Stretching over 5 meters in length, the illustrations connect into a single continuous image when fully unfolded, creating a breathtaking effect. Readers can first flip through the pages in the usual way, then unfold the entire book to view it as one connected image for an even more moving experience.
When you turn all the way through the front pages and reach the back, the song flows once again. On the reverse side is a truly one-of-a-kind score—sheet music handwritten by Lucid Fall himself, combined with Suzy Lee's illustrations. Watercolor paintings layered over pencil-drawn staff lines and musical notes create a score full of warm, analog charm. This book will bring joy not only to fans of Lucid Fall's music, but also to readers who wish to play and sing along with the song themselves.
