Description: A picture book based on a poem by the famous 19th-century German novelist Theodor Fontane, illustrated by Nonny Hogrogian, a two-time Caldecott Medal winner. The story, which invites readers to reflect on 'how one should live,' feels all the more contemplative alongside woodcut-style illustrations that lend a warm, comforting mood. Through the story of a grandfather who lived a life of sharing pears with others, the book encourages young readers to think about the value of giving. This work has long been beloved as a classic in Germany.

About the Author: Born in 1819 in Neuruppin, Germany, the son of a pharmacist. Due to difficult family circumstances, he completed vocational school and worked as a pharmacist's assistant in Leipzig, Dresden, and Letschin, among other places. In 1844, he served as a volunteer soldier in Berlin, during which time he joined the Berlin writers' group 'Tunnel über der Spree' and remained active in it for about 20 years. During the March Revolution of 1848, he participated in the barricade struggles led by the civic class and began contributing radically-minded writings to newspapers. In 1849, at the age of 30, he gave up his career as a pharmacist and decided to become a writer, debuting the following year with a collection of ballads. From 1855, he spent four years in London as a government-affiliated journalist, experiencing British industrial society firsthand while contributing articles on English history, politics, and culture to newspapers. He later published travel writings such as 'A Summer in London' and 'Rambles Through the March of Brandenburg,' as well as numerous war chronicles based on his experiences during the Prussian unification wars. Having first made a name for himself as a travel writer and ballad poet, Fontane turned seriously to novel writing in 1878, at nearly 60 years old, with the publication of 'Before the Storm.' By the time of his death, he had written a total of eighteen novels, including his unfinished final work, 'Mathilde Möhring.' With the exception of two historical novels, all of his works dealt with the social realities of his time. 'Effi Briest,' his representative work, showcases his deep interest in and sharp insight into the society of his day; through this novel, he presented 'a portrait of the age we belong to' and earned renown as a master of 19th-century German realist literature. He passed away in Berlin on September 20, 1898, at the age of 79.
