Winner of the 2016 Golden Dokkaebi Award!
An astonishing new work from Jinho Jung, winner of the 2015 Bologna Ragazzi Award
A magical picture book that lets us see the world anew through a mysterious world of space.
"The Wall excels in concept and thematic delivery. Its visual sensibility is concise, with nothing to add or take away. As a clean, cartoon-like work, both its structure and graphics are outstanding."
—Judges Park Hwa-yeong, Lee Ho-baek
The new picture book The Wall by Jinho Jung, winner of the 2016 Golden Dokkaebi Award, has been published by Bir. Jinho Jung won the Ragazzi Award at the 2015 Bologna Children's Book Fair, establishing himself as a promising new Korean picture book artist drawing international attention.
True to his background in architecture, Jung reinterprets familiar spaces in fresh and surprising ways in The Wall. Composed only of straight lines, curves, and the colors yellow and blue, The Wall draws readers into a magical world of space.
Lay The Wall flat and turn the pages one by one, and the whole and its parts naturally take shape in your mind. Simply following the child in the illustrations feels like experiencing virtual reality, awakening a sense of space. Hold The Wall open with both hands and narrow or widen it, and you can compare how the positions and distances of the walls in the pictures change—adding even more fun to the experience.
As children play with this book, concepts of direction and space—front and back, up and down, inside and outside, right and left—become deeply imprinted. The Wall awakens children's spatial sensibility and gives them the joy of imagination, while offering adults an open-hearted, warm way of looking at the world.
"The wall is a story of inside and outside. Everything has an inside and an outside. It all depends on which way we look. What matters most is having the warmth of heart to see all sides together."
—Author Jinho Jung
The Joy of Exploring a Mysterious World of Space
A curious child follows a wall and discovers a small window. The child thinks they are looking in, but somehow ends up looking out. Following the wall, the child moves closer, only to end up farther away. This time, entering through a door, the child instead comes back outside. The child thinks they turned right, but is actually going left. Looking at a window that seems small, the child wonders—could it actually be big? Why does a small window make the child think of something big?
The picture book The Wall captures a world of space that looks different depending on the direction from which it's viewed. Children who read this book will find themselves picturing the space in their minds as they follow each scene. As they enjoy imagining the character's changing positions and directions, children naturally develop a sense and understanding of space. It's also wonderful for a child to pick a favorite scene and freely imagine and expand the space within it.
By looking closely at the pictures, noticing the changes, and picturing them in their minds, children will enjoy spatial perception like a game—building observation skills, discernment, memory, and imagination along the way.
A Magical Picture Book That Lets Us See the World Anew
The Wall repeatedly presents opposite concepts—inside and outside, right and left, small and big—in a way that is simple yet strikingly clear at a glance. Yet this remarkable picture book also reveals that the very same image can be interpreted differently depending on the direction from which we view it. Even in the same place, looking from a different angle reveals parts we hadn't noticed before. And once we notice what we had missed, our thinking changes too.
The picture book The Wall will help us see the world with fresh eyes, making our lives feel richer and happier.
Sensory, Artistic Beauty Created with Only Lines and Colors
Jinho Jung has translated a three-dimensional spatial world onto two-dimensional paper with remarkably original and refined composition. Using only straight lines and curves to express both the parts and the whole of space, and just two colors—yellow and blue—to depict changes in position, the artistic beauty here is exceptional. The three-dimensional space captured fully within the picture book allows anyone who opens it to instantly imagine a 3D world in their mind. A single, friendly-looking character moves along what could otherwise feel like a hard, cold 'wall,' bringing warmth and life to the journey.
