Description: Neverland Picture Books Masterpiece Collection, Volume 86. This book captures the four seasons of nature through John Burningham's distinctive interpretation and artistic expression. Burningham's depiction of the seasons feels as comfortable as sitting cozily by a large, wide window, gazing out at the scenery beyond. His illustrations show no sense of depth, no bustling movement, and no distinct facial expressions. Yet his artwork never feels uncomfortable, awkward, or overly demanding. The sheep drawn with a single line for legs, body, and ears, or the eyes made with two dots and the nose and mouth rendered with thin lines, feel like they could have been drawn by a child putting in their best effort — and this makes them all the more charming and endearing. The text is just as simple as his artwork. There are no elaborate embellishments, no tangled metaphors, no lengthy explanations — only simple depictions of the natural phenomena that accompany each change of season. Much like a first grader presenting to classmates, Burningham arranges only two or three words per page throughout The Seasons, and it often takes several quick page turns before a single sentence is completed. At first glance, these few words seem almost like part of the illustration itself, blending into the page. Because this brief text never demands intense concentration to read, the images are absorbed well before the words, drawing readers to first experience the feeling the pictures convey. These carefully chosen words align perfectly with the illustrations on each page, beautifully capturing the distinct character of each season.

Spring, summer, fall, and winter return faithfully each year, always appearing in the same familiar forms — yet the feeling of welcoming each new spring, summer, fall, and winter is always subtly different. It seems Burningham found it difficult to capture the ever-changing feeling of the seasons using just one material or technique. Instead, he blended together every material and method he knew, unleashing every color he could express in what feels like a vibrant celebration of color. And yet the result is never flashy or overwhelming. Rather, through a consistent arrangement of muted mid-tones and an inventive technique that effectively combines materials with very different textures, he creates a soft, stable, and soothing atmosphere. Perhaps for this reason, The Seasons is widely regarded as the picture book in which Burningham most effectively brought together a diverse range of materials with distinctly different qualities, more so than in any of his other works.
