■ A Hidden Tragedy Spanning Three Generations: Yeongjo, Crown Prince Sado, and Jeongjo!
A father who died locked inside a rice chest. Repeated assassination attempts on his own life... And so, young Isan made a vow: "I will survive! If becoming king is the only way to survive, then I will become king!"
"If the king is a ship, the people are the water." King Jeongjo, who championed reform politics for the sake of the people, led a renaissance in Joseon's politics and culture through new policies such as the Tangpyeong policy of balanced court appointments, the expansion of the Kyujanggak royal library, the abolition of merchant monopoly privileges, and the construction of Hwaseong Fortress!
When his father, Crown Prince Sado, died after eight days locked inside a rice chest, his son Isan was only eleven years old. Afterward, as Isan received training as crown prince under King Yeongjo, factions opposed to his ascension to the throne continued their relentless schemes and threats. Yet Isan endured all the plots and dangers, and in 1776 finally ascended the throne to become Jeongjo, the 22nd king of Joseon. Jeongjo went on to achieve remarkable feats—including the Tangpyeong policy, the expansion of Kyujanggak, the abolition of merchant monopoly privileges, and the construction of Suwon Hwaseong Fortress—becoming a reform-minded monarch who ushered in a golden age of Joseon politics and culture.
