Every year, hundreds of children's books from around the world are translated into Korean. Most are award-winning titles whose literary merit and popularity have already been proven in their home countries. Even so, few of these books go on to be truly beloved by Korean readers—moving readers across different borders, cultures, and sensibilities is a rare and difficult feat. Charlotte's Web, which has surpassed 100 printings over more than 20 years and continues to be introduced to new generations of young readers, is proof itself of the birth of a 'new classic.'
Widely regarded as one of the finest children's books published in the United States, Charlotte's Web was first officially introduced in Korean by Sigongjunior in 1996, with a revised edition following in 2000 that has been beloved ever since. In January 2016, the Korean edition surpassed its 100th printing, and having been selected as required reading for Korean elementary students, Charlotte's Web has firmly established itself as a true steady-seller. This second revised edition captures the unique flavor of E. B. White's prose and features a clean new cover befitting a classic.
· Lessons in a Better Life, Learned from Farm Animals
In an age when things appear and vanish quickly, where does the enduring strength of Charlotte's Web—sought out by countless readers over so many years—come from? It lies in how vividly the book conveys weighty themes essential to our lives, such as the cycle of life and true friendship, through animals with vivid, distinct personalities. The story also gives equal, careful weight to the emotions and movements shared between humans and animals. That Fern, who can understand the animals' speech, is never portrayed as an overly dramatic child (though her mother does worry that she's not quite like other children), and that the spider's ability to weave words into her web with the rat's help is received not as an 'absurd' tale but as the 'mysterious' power of nature—both are the result of the author's delicate intention. This is a special gift belonging only to someone who deeply understands children as they move freely between reality and imagination while growing up. The many studies and papers still being written about Charlotte's Web today stand as a testament to this achievement.
· The Shining Friendship of Wilbur and Charlotte, Beyond Prejudice
Charlotte's Web tells the story of Wilbur, a piglet born on a small country farm, and the animals around him, including a spider named Charlotte. Though the story contains no grand scale or extraordinary adventure, it has become an unforgettable work for countless readers because Wilbur and Charlotte's friendship shines brighter and more precious than any other—transcending the prejudice that pigs are dirty and spiders are creepy.
Wilbur, born the runt of his litter and dismissed as a worthless, dirty creature, becomes friends with Charlotte, a spider who at first seems cruel and bloodthirsty. To save Wilbur from becoming Christmas ham, Charlotte gives him new names in her web—'Some Pig,' 'Terrific,' and 'Humble'—transforming how everyone sees him. Thanks to this, Wilbur...
