▣ Seoul, the Capital of South Korea—What Kind of City Is It?
Seoul, the capital of the Republic of Korea where we live! Located in the western part of the central Korean Peninsula, Seoul serves as the administrative, financial, and cultural heart of the country. Although it makes up only 0.6% of Korea's total land area, it is a massive city home to more than 13 million of the nation's over 50 million people.
People have lived in Seoul since the Neolithic era, and the city has carried nearly 2,000 years of history ever since. During the Three Kingdoms period, Baekje, Goguryeo, and Silla all fought to control the Han River region. During the Goryeo dynasty, thanks to its favorable geography and convenient transportation, the area was highly regarded and known as 'Namgyeong,' meaning 'southern capital.'
From the Joseon dynasty onward, the city took on its role as the nation's capital in earnest. Having served as the center of politics, economy, and industry since the Joseon era, Seoul remains home to many of Korea's most important institutions today, and the country's transportation network continues to be centered around the city.
After the devastation of the Korean War, the nation's rapid development brought serious challenges to Seoul—traffic congestion, housing shortages, and environmental issues. Yet the city overcame these hardships and transformed itself into a truly international city. Once a small town north of the Han River, Seoul continued to expand and is now a massive metropolis spanning both banks of the river.
Having hosted the 1988 Seoul Olympics and the 2002 Korea-Japan World Cup, this global city—known as the 'open capital'—continues to grow and thrive today.
